This groundbreaking book analyzes the dramatic impact of Han Chinese migration into Inner Mongolia during the Qing era. In the first detailed history in English, Yi Wang explores how processes of commercial expansion, land reclamation, and Catholic proselytism transformed the Mongol frontier long before it was officially colonized and incorporated into the Chinese state. Wang reconstructs the socioeconomic, cultural, and administrative history of Inner Mongolia at a time of unprecedented Chinese expansion into its peripheries and China’s integration into the global frameworks of capitalism and the nation-state. Introducing a peripheral and transregional dimension that links the local and regional processes to global ones, Wang places equal emphasis on broad macro-historical analysis and fine-grained micro-studies of particular regions and agents. She argues that border regions such as Inner Mongolia played a central role in China’s transformation from a multiethnic empire to a modern nation-state, serving as fertile ground for economic and administrative experimentation. Drawing on a wide range of Chinese, Japanese, Mongolian, and European sources, Wang integrates the two major trends in current Chinese historiography—new Qing frontier history and migration history—in an important contribution to the history of Inner Asia, border studies, and migrations.

Australia-China Relations post 1949
This book challenges the common perceptions of Australian dependence upon great-power allies in the conduct of its foreign relations through a critical examination of Australia's relations with the People's Republic of China. The author focuses on the economic and political dimensions of the policy-making process from the founding of the PRC in 1949 to the present era, against an analytical framework that takes into account both internal and external factors in the formulation and implementation of Australian foreign policy. Informed by political science and international relations, the book differs from the conventional literature on Sino-Australian relations, which has either focused on pure economic analysis or concentrated on chronicling historical events. The author weaves theoretical insights from political science and international relations into the historical analysis while seeking to examine the interplay between political and economic factors over time in shaping policy outcomes. The book draws not only on primary and secondary sources but also on information and insights obtained from interviews with a vast array of direct participants in the policy process, including almost all the former ambassadors from both China and Australia, covering the entire period of the diplomatic relationship. As a result, the book breaks new ground, especially from the Hawke era onwards, revealing hitherto overlooked details of interest in the policy process.

Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping: Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Tissue Magnetism
Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping gives a systematic account of the fundamentals of physical concepts, technical algorithms, and biomedical applications associated with magnetic resonance imaging of tissue magnetism. Recent progresses in MRI phase analyses and in numerical optimization solvers of inverse problems and promising applications in studying iron and oxygen metabolisms and hemorrhage have attracted many people to investigate quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM). The objective of this book is to provide a comprehensive and timely introduction for the newly formed and rapidly growing QSM community. Emphasis has been placed on clarity throughout the narrative. Detailed considerations are presented to clarify the subtleties of the physics of magnetism and magnetic resonance signals: - Thorough demonstrations of the forward problem from magnetic susceptibility to field. - Comprehensive descriptions of major approaches to solving the field to susceptibility inverse problem. - Specific examples of clinical and scientific applications. Engineers, physicists, and clinicians at all levels, from students to established investigators, will find Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping a useful aid in understanding the physical principles of magnetic resonance imaging of tissue magnetic properties.
Principles of Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Physics Concepts, Pulse Sequences, & Biomedical Applications
Principles of Magnetic Resonance Imaging provides a contemporary introduction to the fundamental concepts of MRI, applies these concepts in biomedical applications, and relates these concepts to the latest MRI developments. A unified approach based on spin phase factor averaging is supplied to connect microscopic molecular processes with macroscopic MRI contrasts: relaxation, transport and magnetism. Graphic illustrations of Bloch Equation solutions and various biophysical processes are presented for visualizing abstract ideas. Simplified calculations and specific examples are given for precise appreciation of fundamental concepts. Insightful interpretations and clinical examples are furnished for exemplifying biomedical information in MRI. This book contains three parts: I. Section the body into voxels. Part I describes the Fourier encoding matrix for imaging, its realization in magnetic resonance (MR) using gradient fields, and k-space sampling.II. What's in a voxel? Part II examines the effects of biophysical processes on MRI voxel signal. Spin phase factor averaging over the observation time and voxel space is provided as a unified biophysical model for explaining major MRI contrasts: Proton-proton interaction in a short range defined by local cellular contents (relaxation) causes T2 signal decay and T1 energy loss.Proton motion (transport) including diffusion, perfusion, flow and biomechanical motion can be measured as a phase contrast or signal decay using a gradient field.Electron-proton interaction (magnetism: nonlocal effects of magnetic susceptibility and local effects of chemical shift) can be quantitatively analyzed from MRI signal phase. The connection of MRI contrast physics to tissue molecular contents is conceptualized in the following three terms: 1) cellularity for T2 weighted imaging and diffusion weighted imaging (the latter emphasizing cellular geometry), 2) vascularity for T1 weighted imaging with Gadolinium injection, MR perfusion, and MR angiography, and 3) biomolecularity for MR spectroscopy and magnetic susceptibility imaging.III. How to operate an MRI machine? Part III describes MRI safety issues, hardware, software including advanced imaging methods, MRI scanning, and routine MRI protocols. As examples of applying basic physics concepts, this MRI book further illustrates the latest technological innovations, including: B_(1+)and B_(1-) mapping; Chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST); Electric property tomography (EPT); Magnetic particle imaging (MPI); MR elastography (MRE); Moving spin tagging including ASL, SPAMM and DENSE; Navigator motion compensation; Parallel or accelerated imaging including SENSE, GRAPPA, compressed sensing and other Bayesian approaches; Quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM)
