Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955) var jesuitpater och paleontolog. Som ung ordensbroder undervisade han i fysik och kemi vid jesuitkollegiet i Kairo. Efter fördjupade studier i geologi och paleontologi - och tjänstgöring som sjukvårdare i första världskriget - doktorerade han 1922 vid Sorbonne. Under 1920-talet deltog han i olika paleontologiska expeditioner till Kina. Där kom han att stanna i tjugo år. I Peking färdigställde han manus till sitt huvudverk Fenomenet människan, där han utgår från Darwins evolutionslära. Men katolska kyrkan vägrade honom tryckningstillstånd: boken hade överskridit gränsen mellan vetenskapens och trons domäner. Sina fyra sista år bodde han i New York, knuten till Wenner-Gren-stiftelsen för antropologisk forskning. Efter hans död behövdes inget tryckningstillstånd, boken kunde publiceras.
