Advances in Gas Phase Ion Chemistry

Advances in Gas Phase Ion Chemistry

Gas-phase ion chemistry is a broad field which has many applications and which encompasses various branches of chemistry and physics. An application that draws together many of these branches is the synthesis of molecules in interstellar clouds. This was part of the motivation for studies on the neutralization of ions by electrons and on isomerization in ion-neutral associations. The results of investigations of particular aspects of ion dynamics are presented in this volume. Solvation in ion-molecule reactions is discussed and extended to include multiply charged ions by the application of electrospray techniques. This volume also provides a wealth of information on reaction thermodynamics which is critical in determining reaction spontaneity and availability of reaction channels. More focused studies are also presented towards the end of this volume, relating to the ionization process and its nature.

Fermentation and Food Safety covers the issues and processes that influence and affect the safety of fermented foods. Beginning with an explanation of fermented foods, basic safety issues, and the HACCP system, this contributed volume explores fermented foods associated with food-borne illnesses, including details of specific cases, causative agents, and the underlying reasons for their presence. The book deals individually with relevant chemical and microbiological hazards that may threaten public health, covering severity, rate of occurrence, introduction into foods, foods specifically at risk, and conditions that remove or inactivate these hazards. 'Fermentation and Food Safety' also looks at the impact of currently employed and novel fermentation processes and starters on hazards, with a specific focus on biotechnology issues. This unique reference is pertinent to the safe production of fermented foods at all scales, with all major food groups, and should be a valuable resource for anyone involved in research, processing, safety, or quality of fermented foods.

Manual flight control system design for fighter aircraft is one of the most demanding problems in automatic control. Fighter aircraft dynamics generally have highly coupled uncertain and nonlinear dynamics. Multivariable control design techniques offer a solution to this problem. Robust Multivariable Flight Control provides the background, theory and examples for full envelope manual flight control system design. It gives a versatile framework for the application of advanced multivariable control theory to aircraft control problems. Two design case studies are presented for the manual flight control of lateral/directional axes of the VISTA-F-16 test vehicle and an F-18 trust vectoring system. They demonstrate the interplay between theory and the physical features of the systems.
The Molecular Immunology of Complex Carbohydrates

The Molecular Immunology of Complex Carbohydrates

During the past three decades, the sugar moiety of complex carbohydrates has been found to be involved in important interactions of immunological specificity of antigens and to participate in a variety of cellular functions. The long polysaccharide side chains of the lipopolysaccharides on the outer membrane of Gram negative organisms provide surface antigens for differential serodiagnosis. Bacterial surface lectins are important in mediating the attachment of bacteria to host cells in the of infectious diseases. The carbohydrate pathogenesis moieties of cell surface glycoconjugates (glycoproteins and glycolipids) of mammals are the sites for intercellular recognition and for the regulatory molecular interactions such as interaction of complex carbohydrate with hormones or hepatic lectins. The carbohydrate side chains of many complex carbohydrates play essential roles as antigenic determinants b of human blood group ABH, Lea, Le , I, and i activities, as the Forssman specific determinant, and as tumor associated antigenic determinants. Prompted by these and other advances in the field, a Symposium on Molecular Immunology of Complex Carbohydrates was organized as a satellite meeting of the 8th International Glycoconjugate Conference held on September 8- 13, 1985, in Houston, Texas, U. S . A. Many eminent scientists contributed their knowledge at this meeting. The lecture and poster materials of the symposium are contained in this proceeding book, which is divided into four Sections and one Appendix. Section I is entitled Antibody Specificity, Epitope, and Lectinology. Dr. Elvin A.

In the midst of life we can find ourselves pulled in many different directions and it is easy to lose our sense of self. Is it possible to find and strengthen the inner core of who we are? Can we rediscover our inner equilibrium and tranquillity without retreating from the world? Since ancient times people have sought to re-establish inner balance by using specific meditative practices. The ‘soul exercises’ described in this booklet are derived from Rudolf Steiner’s spiritual philosophy, but also acknowledge the Buddhist tradition of mindfulness. Offering strategies to boost self-confidence, self-reliance, inner stability and concentration, they are intended for anyone seeking personal growth. The exercises are perfect for enriching everyday life, but can also help in times of stress, mental and emotional crisis, burn-out and in the context of psychiatric and psychosomatic therapies. In a series of short chapters illustrated with beautiful colour photos, this booklet offers accessible and easy-to-follow commentary and instructions on creating a path of inner development and balance. KLAUS ADAMS, born 1961, trained as a nurse at Herdecke district hospital. He has worked as a nurse at Friedrich-Husemann Clinic in Buchenbach, near Freiburg, Germany, since 1990. Joseph Turcillo was born to poor Italian-Americans in New Jersey in the 1930s. When he was only four, his father was taken away by the police. With his father imprisoned and his illiterate mother working long hours to support the family, Joseph ran wild in the streets with other young toughs. Fortunately, he discovered a direction in life when he watched a doctor treat his mother. He decided to become a physician, but the road was hard. Joseph did not know how to read and was held back in school. Determined to succeed, he fortuitously received the support of engaged and helpful mentors. After Joseph realized his dream of becoming a doctor, his world was transformed. He moved to California, dated hundreds of glamorous and famous women, and met and married a "perfect woman" named Pat. They had two beautiful daughters, his practice grew, and he eventually moved to a seaside home in Malibu. However, beneath this idyllic fa ade, tragedy loomed. Joseph was left to cope with loss that forced him to reevaluate the choices he had made in life. Out of heartbreak, Joseph learned to recognize what is most important in life.

An evolutionary and cognitive account of the addictive mind candy that is humor. Some things are funny-jokes, puns, sitcoms, Charlie Chaplin, The Far Side, Malvolio with his yellow garters crossed-but why? Why does humor exist in the first place? Why do we spend so much of our time passing on amusing anecdotes, making wisecracks, watching The Simpsons? In Inside Jokes, Matthew Hurley, Daniel Dennett, and Reginald Adams offer an evolutionary and cognitive perspective. Humor, they propose, evolved out of a computational problem that arose when our long-ago ancestors were furnished with open-ended thinking. Mother Nature-aka natural selection-cannot just order the brain to find and fix all our time-pressured misleaps and near-misses. She has to bribe the brain with pleasure. So we find them funny. This wired-in source of pleasure has been tickled relentlessly by humorists over the centuries, and we have become addicted to the endogenous mind candy that is humor.

Af?rms, validates, and reiterates the yearning for an orderly, peaceful and just world The old adage “One picture is worth ten thousand words” is definitely true for Faces of Freedom Summer. There are simply not enough words to describe the period in our history that is recorded by the pictures in this book. As this book afirms, the resurgence of overt activities by hate groups—both the old traditional ones (e.g., the Ku Klux Klan) and the new ones (e.g., the Skin Heads)—however much the hard work and sacri?ces of the modern civil rights movement humanized American society, much still remains to be done. The modern civil rights movement associated with the 1960s was not in vain, yet it did not eradicate from our society the evils of racism and sexism. While we activists made the United States more of an open society than it has ever been in its history, our vision and desire for the beloved community did not reach into all sectors of American society. “Freedom,” it has been said, “is a constant struggle, a work of eternal vigilance.”Faces of Freedom Summer brings to life that there was such a time and there were such people and, if such a people were once, then they are still among us. Yet, they may only become aware of themselves when they are confronted with visible evidence, such as the evidence contained in the pictures of Herbert Randall.
