Five Short Stories to excite and enthrall. Here are examples of the anti-detective novel genre. Ken Frane is not a very successful gumshoe but he is tenacious. Former police detective turned private investigator he embarks on a number of strange and challenging cases. After a gentle introduction to the protagonist himself in the Dubrovnik Postcard affair he takes a holiday in Barmouth which turns into Big trouble in little Bermo. His lifelong love of Cardiff City FC gives him that extra bit of insight into solving the Bluebird Voodoo Doll. The Welsh political establishment is shaken by the murder of Andrew Leighton on the steps of the National Assembly and Ken Frane is inadvertently drawn into the Arab Israeli conflict in the final short story Farewell and a Jew. Tall tales that will keep you thinking long after you have closed the book.

Ken Russell: On Screen celebrates the film and television career of one of the world's most innovative, controversial, and outrageous directors of all time. Over the top, operatic, eccentric, flamboyant and magnificent, Ken Russell was a one off, a notorious enfant terrible, and the definition of a true maverick. He was also a genius. In a series of articles, writer, musician and filmmaker Chris Wade goes through Ken's long and varied career, focusing on such seminal works as The Devils, Tommy and Lair of the White Worm, as well as assessing his seminal BBC films of the 1960s. Also explored in depth is Ken's final era, The Gorsewood Years, his time as a truly independent filmmaker. The book features new recollections from Russell collaborators like Murray Melvin, who looks back on The Devils, his son Xavier Russell, Rick Wakeman and many more, plus pictures provided by Ken's wife Lisi. This is the first book-length study to critically examine the work of Ken Burns, the innovative producer-director as a television auteur, a pivotal programming influence within the industry, and a popular historian who portrays a uniquely personal and compelling version of the country's past for tens of millions of viewers nationwide. Ken Burns's America has a three-fold agenda: First it looks at the ideas and individuals that have influenced Burns in the creation of his easily-recognized style, as well as in the development and maturation of his ideological outlook. Second, the book gives readers a window on the Ken Burns production machine. Gary Edgerton shows us the inner working of Florentine Films. Finally, he looks at Burns as a popular historian who reevaluates the nation's historical legacy from a new generational perspective and, in the process, becomes one of the major cultural commentators of our era. The volume finally takes the full measure of the man and the industry he has helped to create.
Ken Follett

Richard C. Turner

Ken Follett had the purest of motives when he began writing fiction: he did it for the money. But after ^IEye of the Needle^R catapulted him to success and secured his reputation as a master of the spy thriller, he both built on that success with other spy thrillers and experimented equally successfully with other genres such as the family saga and the historical romance. This is the first full-length study of his work and it includes individual examinations of each of his major novels, from Eye of the Needle (1978) to A Place Called Freedom (1995), as well as his early novels.Following a chapter on Follett's life and career, Turner discusses in depth Follett's early novels and his one nonfiction work, On the Wings of Eagles. A genre chapter examines Follett's use of historical settings and his use of the genres of spy thriller, saga, and historical romance in his novels. The rest of the study is devoted to an individual examination of each of his novels in turn, with subsections on plot, character, theme, point of view, and literary devices. Turner also offers an alternative critical approach to reading each novel, such as psychoanalytical, Marxist, or reader response, to give the reader another perspective from which to read and discuss it. A complete bibliography of Follett's fiction, general criticism and biographical sources, and listings of reviews of all the novels examined in the study completes the work. The only study of one of the best-selling writers today, who appeals to adults and young adults alike, this is a key purchase for schools and public libraries.

Ken Kiff: The Complete Prints
The first survey of Ken Kiff's prints. Characterized by radiant colour and fantastic flights of the imagination, Ken Kiff RA (1935–2001) displayed one of the most individual and distinctive artistic styles of the 20th century. Kiff pursued the formal qualities of painting – shape, line, texture, transparency and colour. His practice was driven by an exploration of the material and emotional properties of colour, viewing colour as image, and image as colour. He melded figuration and abstraction, allowing colour and meaning to enhance one another. Kiff made prints throughout his career and his range of media expanded to include almost every printmaking technique. He collaborated with master printmakers in the UK, Europe and America, including Dorothea Wight, Erik Holgersson and Garner Tullis. Drawing on his extensive materials archive, diaries and letters, together with memories from his collaborators in the medium, this important thread of his work is now presented comprehensively in this expansive volume. Editions, blocks, stones and proofs all feature to present the complete prints of Ken Kiff.

Ken Whisson

Quentin Sprague

MELBOURNE UNIVERSITY PRESS

sidottu
Ken Whisson (1927-2022) was one of Australia's foremost artists, widely acclaimed for an unwaveringly idiosyncratic practice that charted a singular course through seven decades of modern and contemporary Australian painting. Celebrated in his lifetime with the 2012 retrospective exhibition, Ken Whisson: As If, at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney and the Heide Museum of Modern Art, Melbourne, Ken Whisson: Painting & Drawing presents the first comprehensive study of Whisson's life and work. Richly illustrated, including with over 300 plates, and drawing on extensive interviews and archival research, it covers the artist's early decades in Melbourne, his long residence in the Italian city of Perugia, and his return to Australia in 2014. The picture that emerges is of an artist driven by the vagaries of memory and an enduring belief in creative intuition: a combination that resulted in one of the most original bodies of work in Australian art.

Ken Adam and the Art of Production Design

Ken Adam and the Art of Production Design

Ken Adam is acknowledged as the world's greatest living production designer: creator of the look of the James Bond films, winner of Oscars for Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon and the film version of Alan Bennett's The Madness Of King George. Now he explains his own scarcely understood contribution to the art of cinema. Ken Adam is a German who left Germany in the 1930s - and his work was heavily influenced by the German Expressionist cinema of that time. After serving in the RAF during the war, he became involved in production design in 1948, getting his first Art Director credit on Around The World In Eighty Days in 1956. Since then he has designed 75 films, creating the bold and revolutionary designs for the first seven James Bond movies, as well as the startling war room in Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove. Since 1999 an exhibition of Adam's work has been travelling around the world, but the force and variety of his achievements in cinema have not been properly acknowledged until this volume, in which Christopher Frayling expertly conducts a career-length interview with a man whose designs have enriched some of the great films of our time.

At the center of it all are Jim Hawkins, a 14-year-old boy who longs for adventure, and the infamous Long John Silver, who is a complex study of good and evil, perhaps the most famous hero-villain of all time. Silver is an unscrupulous buccaneer-rogue whose greedy quest for gold, coupled with his affection for Jim, cannot help but win the heart of every soul who has ever longed for romance, treasure and adventure.
