Mr. Stanley forbids his adult daughter, a biology student at Tredgold Women's College and the youngest of his five children, to attend a fancy dress ball in London, causing a crisis. Ann Veronica is planning to attend the dance with friends of a down-at-heel artistic family living nearby and has been chafing at other restrictions imposed for no apparent reason on her. After her father resorts to force to stop her from attending the ball, she leaves her home in the fictional south London suburb of Morningside Park in order to live independently in an apartment "in a street near the Hampstead Road" in North London. Unable to find appropriate employment, she borrows forty pounds from Mr. Ramage, an older man, without realizing she is compromising herself...

This forward-thinking book offers an actionable roadmap to reinventing fossil fuel ports as circular economy precincts. The authors advocate for decarbonised ports that recover materials, host clean energy production plants, and support new industries. With coordinated effort, ports can cut emissions, create skilled jobs, attract investment and improve local environments. Using real-world cases, the book provides clear guidance on assessing existing assets and hinterland strengths, launching low-risk pilot projects, scaling proven technologies, redesigning business models and aligning policy, finance and governance. Chapters cover industrial symbiosis, renewable power, digital and automation solutions, funding options, and community engagement, with checklists, metrics and practical examples. Navigating Ports and the Circular Economy is an essential resource for students and scholars in transport and maritime studies, industrial ecology and sustainability. It is also a beneficial guide for port leaders, policymakers, investors and communities seeking a credible path from fossil fuel dependence to resilient, low-carbon growth.

Emilio Silva Barrera, a prominent Spanish journalist, recounts his tireless search for, and discovery of, the body of his grandfather, a civilian who was murdered by fascist gunmen in the first months of the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) and left in a roadside ditch. Due to the pervasive fear that permeated daily life in that country, many thousands of victims of politically-motivated crimes were never discovered, no questions were asked, no justice served. Thanks to Silva's determination to right the wrongs of Spain's totalitarian past, the silence imposed by repression is being broken.Silva's determination to help families of "disappeared" relatives led him to create the Association for the Recovery of Historical Memory. This group is dedicated to the discovery, exhumation, identification and return of the remains of victims of political violence during and after the Spanish Civil War to their families for proper burial.Anyone who has ever felt powerless in the face of a seemingly impossible hurdle and asked, "But what can one person do?" should read this book.
