Why Presidents Fail

Why Presidents Fail

Democracy and political parties go hand in hand. Strong parties are fundamental for advancing, stabilizing, and improving democratic governance. But how exactly do political parties relate to, and contribute to, the survival of presidential administrations? Since 1979, over twenty Latin American chief executives had been forced out of office, without a democratic breakdown—a phenomenon known as "presidential failure." Why Presidents Fail offers a nuanced assessment of how political parties influence how and when executives weather political crises and unrest. Christopher A. Martínez takes a close look at how different factors come into play to explain why some presidents complete their terms in office without incident, others barely make it to the end after stumbling upon crisis after crisis, and some are forced out or impeached before their term is finished. Drawing on a novel theoretical approach, an original database on presidential scandals and anti-government demonstrations, regression (survival analysis) models, country case studies, and interviews with more than one hundred country specialists and top-level politicians, Why Presidents Fail provides an innovative, comprehensive assessment of how political parties influence presidential survival and contributes fresh ideas to the debates on the stability of presidential governments.

The Basics of World Religion is uniquely designed to introduce students to fundamental concepts in world religion. The text provides the critical information students need to grasp the basics of religion and build upon that knowledge in more advanced courses. The text begins with an introduction to religion as a concept, practice, and academic discipline, and outlines the four key types of religion and major world religions. The proceeding chapter addresses various aspects and types of ancient and indigenous religions including shamanism, divination and astrology, creation stories, and more. Dedicated chapters explore branches, belief systems, common myths, and holidays of Islam, Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Daoism, Confucianism, Shinto and Korean religion, and Sikhism. The book concludes with a chapter that outlines new and emerging religions. Throughout, students are exposed to illustrations and photos of religious rituals, figures, and houses of worship in the United States to bring the content to life.Lively, humorous, and engaging in its presentation of material, The Basics of World Religion is an ideal resource for introductory undergraduate courses in religion.

Support Vector Machines (SVM) were introduced in the early 90's as a novel nonlinear solution for classification and regression tasks. These techniques have been proved to have superior performances in a large variety of real world applications due to their generalization abilities and robustness against noise and interferences. This book introduces a set of novel techniques based on SVM that are applied to antenna array processing and electromagnetics. In particular, it introduces methods for linear and nonlinear beamforming and parameter design for arrays and electromagnetic applications.

This book acquaints readers with recent developments in dynamical systems theory and its applications, with a strong focus on the control and estimation of nonlinear systems. Several algorithms are proposed and worked out for a set of model systems, in particular so-called input-affine or bilinear systems, which can serve to approximate a wide class of nonlinear control systems. These can either take the form of state space models or be represented by an input-output equation. The approach taken here further highlights the role of modern mathematical and conceptual tools, including differential algebraic theory, observer design for nonlinear systems and generalized canonical forms.

This practical resource provides an overview of machine learning (ML) approaches as applied to electromagnetics and antenna array processing. Detailed coverage of the main trends in ML, including uniform and random array processing (beamforming and detection of angle of arrival), antenna optimization, wave propagation, remote sensing, radar, and other aspects of electromagnetic design are explored. An introduction to machine learning principles and the most common machine learning architectures and algorithms used today in electromagnetics and other applications is presented, including basic neural networks, gaussian processes, support vector machines, kernel methods, deep learning, convolutional neural networks, and generative adversarial networks. Applications in electromagnetics and antenna array processing that are solved using machine learning are discussed, including antennas, remote sensing, and target classification.

The tenth-anniversary edition of a foundational text in digital media and learning, examining new media practices that range from podcasting to online romantic breakups.Hanging Out, Messing Around, and Geeking Out, first published in 2009, has become a foundational text in the field of digital media and learning. Reporting on an ambitious three-year ethnographic investigation into how young people live and learn with new media in varied settings-at home, in after-school programs, and in online spaces-it presents a flexible and useful framework for understanding the ways that young people engage with and through online platforms: hanging out, messing around, and geeking out, otherwise known as HOMAGO. Integrating twenty-three case studies-which include Harry Potter podcasting, video-game playing, music sharing, and online romantic breakups-in a unique collaborative authorship style, Hanging Out, Messing Around, and Geeking Out combines in-depth descriptions of specific group dynamics with conceptual analysis. Since its original publication, digital learning labs in libraries and museums around the country have been designed around the HOMAGO mode and educators have created HOMAGO guidebooks and toolkits. This tenth-anniversary edition features a new introduction by Mizuko Ito and Heather Horst that discusses how digital youth culture evolved in the intervening decade, and looks at how HOMAGO has been put into practice. This book was written as a collaborative effort by members of the Digital Youth Project, a three-year research effort funded by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and conducted at the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Southern California.

Treating individuals with a substance misuse problem can be challenging, especially if clients present with multiple problems related to the main addiction. Clinicians can feel at a loss as to where to begin, or revert to an attempt to treat underlying problems - ignoring damaging aspects of the substance misuse itself. At times referral to specialists may seem the only responsible way forward. Written by a team of clinical academics in the field of addictions, Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy in the Treatment of Addictions is a ready reference for clinicians that offers a brief, evidence-based, collaborative approach that starts here and now. Client and therapist embark together on a journey to tackle the problem in a practical way. The book includes session tools, worksheets and daily thought records.

This book is the first study of the prolific German filmmaker, performance artist, and TV host Christoph Schlingensief (1960–2010) that identifies him as a practitioner of realism in the theater and lays out how theatrical realism can offer an aesthetic frame sturdy enough to hold together his experiments across media and genres. This volume traces Schlingensief’s developing realism through his theater work in conventional theater venues, in less conventional venues, his opera work focusing on the production of Wagner’s Parsifal at Bayreuth, and his art installations on revolving platforms called Animatographs. This book will be of great interest to scholars of theater, film, and performance art and practitioners.
