Et nytt blikk på et gammelt begrep av Axel Honneth som nr. 73.Denne boka består av to såkalte Tanner-forelesninger som Axel Honneth holdt ved University of California, Berkeley i 2005. Her behandler han begrepet tingliggjøring, først brukt av nymarxisten Georg Lukács og senere av Frankfurterskolen. De brukte alle begrepet for å beskrive det patologiske ved å behandle mennesker som ting. I dag er det filosofiske begrepet lite brukt, men kritikken av tingliggjøring lever fortsatt videre i film, skjønnlitteratur og i forskning.Tingliggjøring betyr at mennesker mister den følelsesmessige evnen til innlevelse i andre personer og hendelser. Det er et brudd med den elementære anerkjennelsen som hos Honneth er en betingelse for å være menneskelig. The idea of socialism has given normative grounding and orientation to the outrage over capitalism for more than 150 years, and yet today it seems to have lost much of its appeal. Despite growing discontent, many would hesitate to invoke socialism when it comes to envisioning life beyond capitalism. How can we explain the rapid decline of this once powerful idea? And what must we do to renew it for the twenty-first century?
