Wounded Masculinity and the Search for (Father) Self in American Film
Susan Mackey-Kallis; Brian Johnston
BLOOMSBURY PUBLISHING PLC

sidottu
Drawing on texts and theorists of Greek myth, psychoanalysis, and masculinities, Susan Mackey-Kallis and Brian Johnston develop and offer a model of rhetorical and mythic criticism to analyze popular American film. In this book, Mackey-Kallis and Johnston focus their analysis on films that point to the need for father atonement, ego-decentering, and the resurrection of the lost feminine to heal our collective gendered cultural wounds. Many of these “mystic” films, they contend, affirm the role of meaningful suffering, compassion, integration of the feminine, self-sacrifice, and transcendence as antidotes to the inevitable woundedness of the human condition. Ultimately, the authors argue for the importance of digging into the substance of cultural wounds – rather than superficially suturing them over – to change the conversation about woundedness and provide a roadmap for healing gendered relations in contemporary American culture. The book concludes with a discussion of Joseph Campbell’s interpretation of the metaphorical power of myth and its transcendent function to argue for a theory of “us”, rather than a theory of “us versus them.” Scholars of film, gender studies, American studies, cultural studies, gender studies, and psychology will find this book of particular interest.
Where do your thoughts wander when your mind isn't busy with practical matters? When you read Paul's letters, it's clear his thoughts always escaped to the Gospel - the Good News of what God's done for us through Christ at the cross was the passion of his life. Although not the first chronologically, Romans is first canonically in terms of the order of Paul's writings in the New Testament. In that sense it's pushed to the forefront - and hence the book's title.Even if you're already familiar with the Gospel, join me as we follow Paul's expert and Spirit-filled defence of it. He'll soon be standing for the defence of the Gospel before Caesar's tribunal at the heart of the Empire, but here in the pages of his letter to the Romans he's already set out a wonderfully orderly 8-part defence of the Gospel that systematically defeats every conceivable objection to it: (1) Introduction (2) Condemnation (3) Justification (4) Sanctification (5) Glorification (6) Predestination (7) Transformation (8) Conclusion.

"We are still masters of our fate. We still are captains of our souls," said Winston Churchill in World War 2, paraphrasing a fragment of a famous poem also admired by Nelson Mandela. Perhaps it's become a cultural meme, but is it in step with the Bible's theme? Can we control our own destiny, or is it all down to chance? Who, or what, is in charge of history? To be credible, any worldview must answer four questions - about our origins, our morality, our (life's) meaning, and our destiny. When the author's daily Bible readings took him to Isaiah 37-47, he found the Biblical worldview does just that in an impressive declaration and demonstration of the sovereignty of God. That's what led to the writing of this book, which along the way seeks to answer some important questions that have puzzled people for centuries: - What does the Bible categorically say about human origins?- Does God change his mind? - Why did God order the killing of peoples in the Old Testament? - Has Israel been left out of God's purposes? - Why bother praying? - Was Jesus' crucifixion simply a terrible accident? - Does God decide who is saved and who isn't? - What are God's purposes in the end times? - Does man have free will? - Do the sign gifts operate today in God's purposes?
In the days of Moses, God lived in the Tabernacle tent in the middle of his people - a portable structure that moved with them on their journey. It included the sacred chest known as the ark of the covenant, normally located in the holy innermost part of God's house which symbolized the Lord's presence. In this short book, Bible teacher Brian Johnston traces the ark's 500-year journey from Sinai to Zion and explains how the ark is a picture of the Lord Jesus who accompanies Christians on their spiritual journey, and gives lessons for our daily walk today.
Myth, Fan Culture, and the Popular Appeal of Liminality in the Music of U2

U2’s ongoing popular appeal is constructed in the spaces between band and fan, commercialism and community, spirituality and nihilism; finding meaning in a surface-oriented popular culture and contradiction in the depths of political and faith-based institutions. The band’s long-term success and continued relevance is a result of their ability to hold these energies in tension without one subsuming the other—to live in the liminal space that such contradictions invite. U2’s mythic trajectory was born from a bygone electronic era, realized in our current digital era but with an eye on the forthcoming virtual era; it is a new myth for the whole world, found in the most unlikely of places, popular culture. This book approaches the band’s mythic trajectory through a combination of rhetorical analysis and autoethnographic explorations that unveil the more personal experiences most of us have with media. Drawing heavily upon the works of Marshal McLuhan, Joseph Campbell, Thomas S. Frentz, and Janice Hocker Rushing, Myth, Fan Culture, and the Popular Appeal of Liminality in the Music of U2 unpacks U2’s popular appeal through the lenses of Agape (spiritual, communal love), Amor (romantic love), and Eros (erotic love). The Old Testament book of Zechariah, one of the minor prophets, might be one that most Christians don't know a lot about. Brian Johnston explains how it's contents are very relevant to the lives of Christians today and explains the meaning of each of the eight visions in the book. As a bonus, an additional book is included, "God's Treasure Box" which thinks about what is important to God by looking at five different types of hearts - worshipping, humble, God-fearing, obedient and wise.
