D.H. Lawrence's Non-Fiction Art, Thought, and Genre

David Ellis; Howard Mills

Cambridge University Press

This is the first book devoted entirely to Lawrence's nonfictional writings. It focuses on a selection of representative texts, each of which is placed in an appropriate literary or historical context. These include the 'Study of Thomas Hardy', the two books about the Unconscious, the travel-writing - primarily Twilight in Italy and Sea and Sardinia - the largely autobiographical 'Introduction to Memoirs of the Foreign Legion by M. M' and the late 'thoughts in verse' called Pansies. David Ellis and Howard Mills challenge the automatic relegation to secondary status suffered by these works in the past and suggest a radical reassessment of Lawrence's literary profile of how his writings relate to one another and of where his greatest power and originality lie.

"Wildly entertaining."--New York Times Book Review From the bestselling and award-winning author comes a wickedly clever and fast-paced novel of greed, revenge, obsession--and quite possibly the perfect murder. Simon and Vicky couldn't seem more normal: a wealthy Chicago couple, he a respected law professor, she an advocate for domestic violence victims. A stable, if unexciting marriage. But one thing's for sure ... absolutely nothing is what it seems. The pair are far from normal, and one of them just may be a killer. When the body of a beautiful socialite is found hanging in a mansion in a nearby suburb, Simon and Vicky's secrets begin to unravel. A secret whirlwind affair. A twenty-million-dollar trust fund about to come due. A decades-long grudge and obsession with revenge. These are just a few of the lies that make up the complex web...and they will have devastating consequences. And while both Vicky and Simon are liars, just who exactly is conning who? Part Gone Girl, part Strangers on a Train, Look Closer is a wild rollercoaster of a read that will have you questioning everything you think you know.

Following God’s call to cross cultural mission, Ellis’ experience from riots, political upheaval, physical hardship, and burn out, to caring for his wife, Adèle, through her Alzheimer’s, he would have been unable to hold fast without a robust biblical understanding of God’s providence and sovereignty. With feeling and honesty Ellis weaves anecdote with biblical meditation, allowing scripture (especially the pivotal Psalm 2) to form the lens through which the world, in all its frightening chaos, is viewed. A personal, pastoral, faith building read, it offers scriptural reflection not trite answers – robust biblical wisdom for guidance, encouragement and challenge for Christians of all ages and stages.

Death and the Author

Death and the Author

David Ellis

Oxford University Press

sidottu
At the heart of Death and the Author is a dramatic account of D. H. Lawrence's desperate struggle against tuberculosis during his last days, and of certain, often bizarre events which followed his death. Around this narrative David Ellis offers a series of reflections about what it is like to have a disease for which there is no cure, the appeal of alternative medicine, the temptation of suicide for the terminally ill, the diminishing role of religion in modern life, the institution of famous last words, the consequences of dying intestate, and so on. These are clearly not the most immediately appealing of topics but they have an obvious significance for everyone and the treatment of them here is by no means lugubrious (even if, in the nature of the case, most of the jokes fall into the category of gallows humour). Lawrence is the main focus throughout but there are extended references to a number of other famous literary consumptives such as Keats, Katherine Mansfield, Kafka, Chekhov, and George Orwell. Not a long book, Death and the author is divided into three parts called `Dying', `Death' and `Remembrance' and is made up of twenty-two short sections. Although it incorporates a good deal of original material, the annotation has been kept deliberately light. The aim has been to combine the drama of events - a good story - with a consideration of matters which must eventually concern us all, and to present the material in a lively and accessible form.
Defining Comedy

Defining Comedy

From the time of Plato and Aristotle, philosophers and psychologists, along with experts from the social sciences and linguistics, have made vain attempts to formulate a general theory of comedy. Passing in review all the usual suspects, including Hobbes, Kant and Bergson, as well as several recent theorists of comedy from America, and while not of course forgetting Freud as well as authors such as Stendhal and Baudelaire, David Ellis suggests that, although comedy is undoubtedly an important topic, with profound implications for both social and private life, there have been better ways to pass one's time than in a fruitless search for an overarching explanation of what it is and how it works. Written in a jargon-free, entertaining style, with illustrations from both famous comic writers and present-day performers in Britain and America, this is a book that can be read with pleasure by all with an interest in comedy, whether they are specialists in the matter or not.
