The United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) was the first international organization to be established after the Second World War, and Canada played a key role in its formation. Formal studies of UNRRA, however, have tended to focus on inter-governmental political and economic relationships and their consequences for shaping the post-war international environment. Armies of Peace is the first comprehensive investigation of Canadians' influence on the establishment and operation of this unique organization. This volume challenges the hierarchical and policy-oriented approach to the study of international organizations and offers a more nuanced understanding of Canada's international involvement. By recounting the stories of hundreds of Canadians who served at every level of the organization and in every country where UNRRA established missions, Susan Armstrong-Reid and David Murray highlight the wider contributions that the nation made. Giving voice to these Canadians' stories also provides a more complete understanding of Canada's role in post-war healing and foreshadows the challenges that Canadians faced in implementing international aid and development initiatives within developing countries during the Cold War. Featuring previously untapped primary sources such as private papers, diaries, and letters, and utilizing a cross-disciplinary approach, Armies of Peace is an invaluable addition to the study of international organizations, Canadian social history, and the history of nursing.

Mettle: Tragedy, Courage and Titles
A SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER THE UNTOLD, INSIDE STORY OF MY LIFE AT RANGERS FC AND IN BUSINESS 'I could fight or I could give up. Turn left or turn right.' For 50 years Sir David Murray has been a towering figure in Scottish business, sport and philanthropy. His family name is synonymous with steel but his rise to power owes as much to mettle as it does to metal. At the age of 24 he was involved in an horrific car crash in which he lost both of his legs. As his life hung in the balance, his days in hospital, drifting in and out of consciousness, were nightmare moments but ones that would define him. In the aftermath, when he finally pulled through, he had stark choices to make. This is a man who thrived on the big stage, as the owner of Rangers Football Club during an unprecedented era of success. He oversaw some memorable European campaigns, all while rubbing shoulders with the likes of Paul Gascoigne, Graeme Souness and Sir Sean Connery. Mettle is a truly remarkable tale of never-say-die triumph over unimaginable adversity.

Sir David Murray's life story is a truly remarkable tale of never-say-die triumph over unimaginable adversity. For 50 years he has been a towering figure in Scottish business, sport and philanthropy. His family name is synonymous with steel but his rise to power owes as much to mettle as it does to metal. At the age of 24 he was involved in a horrific car crash in which he lost both of his legs. As his life hung in the balance, his days in hospital, drifting in and out of consciousness, were nightmare moments but ones that would define him. And in the aftermath, when he finally pulled through, he had stark choices to make.'I could fight or I could give up,' he said. 'Turn left or turn right.' David Murray almost always chose wisely and has never once shied away from big decisions. This is a man who thrived on the big stage, as the owner of Rangers Football Club during an unprecedented era of success. He won nine league titles in a row, oversaw some memorable European campaigns, all while rubbing shoulders with the likes of Paul Gascoigne, Graeme Souness and Sir Sean Connery. He led the talks on the Old Firm clubs joining the English football pyramid, while his sale of the club to Craig Whyte set off a chain of events that eventually saw the club liquidated. Now, for the first time, and in his own words, he is offering a deeply personal insight into his extraordinary life and how he courageously recovered from his accident and then went on to become such a successful entrepreneur. He also gives us his thoughts on the Old Firm rivalry, explains why Celtic Park wasn't the most hostile ground in Scotland for Rangers to visit... and describes how he beat world champion Stephen Hendry at snooker!
The Joys and Troubles of a Missionary Life
Step into the remarkable world of Jowett Murray, a missionary whose life was defined by faith, courage, and a profound love for the people and culture of early 20th-century China. In this richly detailed biography, David J. Murray brings his father's extraordinary story to life, tracing his journey from the quiet Scottish Borders to the vibrant landscapes of China during one of its most turbulent eras.Amidst the sweeping forces of history-war, famine, and political upheaval-Jowett's work as an educator, evangelist, and scholar stood as a testament to resilience and hope. Whether teaching at the prestigious Yenching University, navigating the perils of Japanese occupation, or enduring the hardships of internment camps during World War II, Jowett's unwavering commitment to his mission shines through. The Joys and Troubles of a Missionary Life is a deeply human account of cultural exchange, personal sacrifice, and the enduring impact of faith. Drawing from personal letters, diaries, and vivid recollections, the book paints an intimate portrait of a man who bridged worlds, translating sacred texts, nurturing local leaders, and leaving a legacy that continues to resonate. For readers interested in history, spirituality, or the quiet but profound impact of individual lives, The Joys and Troubles of a Missionary Life offers an unforgettable exploration of one man's journey through the trials and triumphs of a changing world. The nature of the account is brought out by David's changing views over the book's title. It began as just 'A H M Jowett Murray' or 'The life of Jowett Murray', the story of his father's life by his son, a tribute that David had long felt it was an obligation on him to attempt -indeed such dutiful accounts had by then become something of a tradition in the extended Murray family (Murray 1943, Murray1977, Ruthven-Murray 1986).Jowett's life seemed full of troubles. It was not just the sudden death of his first wife, but the arduous nature of many many years spent in harsh conditions, amidst civil war, turmoil, brigands, warlords, and local attacks with placards announcing ' Down with foreign religion', 'End imperialism'. There were constant frustrations. Time after time carefully laid plans were thwarted by unforeseen floods and famines to which Jowett and his colleagues felt called to respond as best they could, abandoning for the time their higher, evangelistic, aims. They stayed, they stuck it out, Jowett among them, year after year after year, in a way that can only really come through in the kind of detail covered in this account. And then, worse, there were (from time to time) misunderstandings, policy disagreements, and indeed at times hostility both from some colleagues in the field and individuals in the mission's London office. At the same time there was inspiration and support from the thinking overseas: in (for Jowett deeply influential) memories of the world missionary conference of Edinburgh in 1910 bringing out the commonality between Christian de-nominations, then in time the 1926 Jerusalem conference, and the 1938 Madras-Tanbaran conference. But then, closer to home, more than once Jowett and others on the spot found the ground being cut from under their feet and their work ended by decisions from London that to them seemed totally uninformed. It was a mix. Missionary life, it emerges, was no bed of roses and it seemed right that the book's title should refer to the troubles of Jowett's missionary life in China.

Murray surveys literature written by lawyers for their amusement, and the amusement of their peers. Much of this genre is humorous; it includes such forms as law lyrics, whimsical dissertations, reports in verse and facetious precedents. Other examples, such as proverbs and memorial verses, have a didactic intent. A final group includes elegantly written legal works and examples based on literary conventions. Moving from the textual to the visual, Murray also considers illustrated law books and legal livres de luxe. An appealing survey, it is also a useful starting point for further research into this fascinating genre. xiv, 302, 2] pp. Frontispiece. Illustrations. Plates.
