Celebrating the diverse languages of Australia’s First Peoples, this book presents stories told by elders in eighteen languages from around the continent, and explores their patterns of meaning. The stories recount the experiences of the tellers and histories of their communities, from tales of anti-colonial resistance to origin stories of the Dreaming. The book aims to make the languages accessible and engaging through the voices of the elders, while building readers’ knowledge about language and language learning. It opens with some basic language knowledge for reading the stories. Each chapter then begins with the cultural and historical contexts of the stories, which are first previewed in English translation, then presented sentence-by-sentence, setting out the original sounds and wordings, glossed with plain English. Extracts are selected to illustrate patterns of meanings that are characteristic of each language. The final chapter sums up the various meaning patterns the stories use, and interprets their evolution in the light of First Peoples’ deep histories, as recorded by archaeology and traditional knowledge. The book will be useful for language learning programs in communities and schools, for researchers of language and language teaching, and for any reader with an interest in the languages and cultures of Australia’s First Peoples.

Here is a story of the retaking of Fallujah, beginning with the discovery of who'd be fighting, and the deployment of Tyler Boggs-team leader-and his team of Recon Marines, soon hunted by the Alzilal; dreaded fighters plaguing the farmlands. It tells of the struggles that led up to the great battle. Tyler is appointed Tip of the Spear, and he and his team alongside a seasoned reporter, once a warfighter himself, set forth for Fallujah, beset by mortars, roadside bombs, and a constant threat of enemy fire. For their task is to punch into the city, the undisputed stronghold of all resistance, and there to fight for their own lives, the lives of those who depend on them, and for the men at their side.Screaming Eagles Wings weaves the twentieth anniversary of Operation Phantom Fury with a vivid retelling of growing up in an era of decay, revelations on brotherhood and family, and, above all, the soaring desire in those who live when the soul so often withers; the desire for peace and liberation.

Ambrose Bierce: journalist, veteran, legend, was as familiar with death as could be a writer of his time. Whether consulting tribulations experienced in the American Civil War, or pulling onto pages tales of ghosts and murder, the short story master and acclaimed satirist blazed a trail for writers of the macabre. Here, and perhaps for the first time made clear, the link between his veteranhood and his dark themes explored, the glory and the gory, is laid to bare.
Supersight: What Augmented Reality Means for Our Lives, Our Work, and the Way We Imagine the Future
NATIONAL INDIE EXCELLENCE AWARDS WINNER -- NONFICTION 2022 IPPY AWARDS BRONZE MEDALIST -- SCIENCE For thousands of years, human vision has been largely unchanged by evolution. We're about to get a software update. Today, Apple, Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Snap, Samsung, and a host of startups are racing to radically change the way we see. The building blocks are already falling into place: cloud computing and 5G networks, AI computer vision algorithms, smart glasses and VR headsets, and mixed reality games like Pok mon GO. But what's coming next is a fundamental shift in how we experience the world and interact with each other. Over the next decade, what we see and how we see it will no longer be bound by biology. Instead, our everyday vision will be augmented with digital information to give us what spatial computing pioneer David Rose calls "SuperSight." And as our view of the world becomes blended layers of information delivered via glasses, contact lenses, or projected light, it will fundamentally change learning, shopping, work, play, and much, much more. David provides an insider's guide to the way our lives are about to change, while also unpacking the downsides of this coming world--what he calls the hazards of SuperSight, from equity and access issues to bubble filter problems--and proposing rational, actionable ways around them. From AI mirrors that advise us on our outfits, to museums that let us talk with deceased explorers and artists, to the ways we envision sustainable cities, the scope of augmented vision is boundless. SuperSight offers a rich speculative preview of the future and its implications, both shocking and thrilling.

Loner, bumpkin, teenager, Matina thought her life's adventures would reach no further than paddling under night cypress or falling through the parchment of a good book. But she owns a great secret, one coming with her approaching womanhood like the mouths of gnashing teeth. Boraor Rehton, the inept shaman, would love nothing more than to leave this wretched town, continuously appointing him their spiritual leader. He knows little about the earthly arts, but the same cannot be said for black magic; tools he uses, which, if caught, would earn him a place on Amden's impaling stakes. Add Pauthor Quithot, recluse, Grubilius Motty, lowlife drunkard, and other malcontents all involved with a mysterious force let loose upon the bog. As the force's mystery wanes, old feuds are inflamed, murder is ready to run rampant, and the threshold separating the living from the dead is hopped over with wicked glee. Alluring, unpredictable, dripping with idiosyncratic folk, AMDEN BOG is dark fantasy where beauty and brutality often hang from the same sagging vine.

Guildford has grown from a Saxon settlement town to become a major commercial centre in Surrey today. William the Conqueror built the Norman castle that still overlooks the town, which became prosperous during the medieval period. The building of the Wey Navigation brought wealth to the town, but its real growth followed after the railway arrived in 1845. Today Guildford is a thriving commercial town with its cathedral, university and extensive redevelopment on its borders. Lost Guildford presents a portrait of a town and a way of life that has radically changed or disappeared today, showing not just the industries and buildings that have gone, but also many popular places of entertainment and much more. This fascinating photographic history of lost Guildford will appeal to all those who live in the town or know it well, as well as those who remember it from previous decades.

How will the world’s oil-producing countries react when fossil fuels are threatened by a new resource? Guardian of Power is an adult thriller about the search for an environmentally clean and sustainable source of energy and how a breakthrough in the research is threatened by an international conspiracy. Dr Ben Moyles is a brilliant, young research physicist working on the Puissance Project in Sergy, near the border between France and Switzerland. The Project was established to look at ways of generating a sustainable source of energy through the process of nuclear fusion. However, no one involved in the Puissance Project is aware that security in the complex has been breached on a major level by a State organisation which has a very strong interest in protecting its investment in oil production. During the course of his work, Ben sets up an experiment before leaving for his summer holiday on the family farm in the UK, intent on reviewing its progress when he returns. When he resumes work, Ben discovers the experiment has been partially successful and this sets in motion a chain of events which puts him – and potentially the whole world – in grave danger. Those readers who prefer a story with intellectual depth as well as heart pounding fiction will enjoy this book.
Skriva, läsa lära

Här presenteras Sydney-skolans senaste forskning inom genrepedagogik och metoden Reading to Learn.
Social Class in Modern Britain

The book incorporates three alternative conceptions of class. Erik Olin Wright's structural Marxist account is set alongside John Goldthorpe's occupational class schema, and the Registrar-General's prestige and skill-related categories. The authors use their unique data on inequality and conflict in contemporary Britain to provide, for the first time, a rigourous comparison of Marxist, sociological and official class frameworks. The book ranges widely across such topics as sectionalism in the workforce; privatism of families and individuals; fatalism; gender and class processes; sectoral production and consumption cleavages. The authors conclude that class is still crucial in structuring economic, political and social life.
