Wind Tunnel Testing of High-Rise Buildings

Wind Tunnel Testing of High-Rise Buildings

Since the 1960s, wind tunnel testing has become a commonly used tool in the design of tall buildings. It was pioneered, in large part, during the design of the World Trade Center Towers in New York. Since those early days of wind engineering, wind tunnel testing techniques have developed in sophistication, but these techniques are not widely understood by the designers using the results. As a direct result, the CTBUH Wind Engineering Working Group was formed to develop a concise guide for the non-specialist.The primary goal of this guide is to provide an overview of the wind tunnel testing process for design professionals. This knowledge allows readers to ask the correct questions of their wind engineering consultants throughout the design process. This is not an in-depth guide to the technical intricacies of wind tunnel testing, it focusses instead on the information the design community needs, including:A unique methodology for the presentation of wind tunnel results to allow straightforward comparison of results from different wind tunnel laboratories. Advice on when a tall building is likely to be sufficiently sensitive to wind effects to benefit from a wind tunnel test. Background for assessing whether design codes and standards are applicable.Details of the types of tests that are commonly conducted.Descriptions of the fundamentals of wind climate and the interaction of wind and tall buildings. This unique book is an essential guide for all designers of tall buildings, and anyone else interested in the process of wind tunnel testing for tall buildings.
Social and Ethnic Inequalities in the Cypriot Education System
Accommodating the diversity of learners in mainstream schooling and providing high quality education for all, inclusive education is prioritised at international and European levels as a human rights issue and as a reform strategy which tackles inequalities and promotes social cohesion within both schools and wider society. This book advances critical realist ideas in empirical research in order to close the theory–practice gap and shift the emphasis from epistemology to ontology with regard to teachers’ empowerment to provide inclusive education. With a focus on the school context rather than the agency of the individual teacher, the authors use empirical data from case studies to demonstrate teachers’ disempowerment as real, and rooted in features of reality. Offering a unified critical realist model, the book challenges taken-for-granted ideas and practices concerning the empowerment of teachers in inclusive education and seeks to set the ground for a more holistic and inclusive educational change.

Gorat has long dreamed to unify the disparate orcish tribes and bring the benefits of civilization to his people, but this would threaten the balance of power that has kept a generation of peace among orcs, elves, and humans. He has a plan to negotiate a new balance, but this must be cast aside when an unsuspected threat falls from the sky. An army of constructs, stronger and smarter than any golems ever built, threatens the sovereignty of all organic races. If ancient enemies can't band together, they will have no hope of resistance.

This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This open access book examines the modern role of the European School system within the European Union, at a time when the global economy demands a new vision for contemporary education. The European schools are currently in a state of crisis: their 60-year-old tradition of bilingual and multilingual education is being strained by rapid EU expansion and the removal of English speaking teachers as a result of Brexit. Their tried and tested model of mathematics and science education has rapidly been overtaken by new developments in pedagogy and assessment research, while recruitment and retention of students and teachers has become increasingly fraught as European member states review what they are, and what they are not, prepared to fund. The authors draw on original and empirical research to assess the European Schools’ place in a new Europe where the entire post-war European Project is potentially at risk. This well-researched volume will be of interest to practitioners working in European schools as well as students and scholars of EU politics and international education.

Education Systems and Learners

Education Systems and Learners

This book explores curricular, teaching and learning practices in schools in England and in higher education institutions, and considers the damaging effects of the Research Excellence Framework (REF) for UK higher education institutions, international comparative assessment systems such as the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), and broadly, how educational judgements are now made about educational matters. David Scott criticizes the implementation of neo-liberal policies and practices in education systems round the world, management and control system approaches, and empiricist/positivist research agendas. The book offers an account of a new education model, which is directly in opposition to agendas currently supported by the right of the political spectrum. It will be of interest to teachers and students of education, the education research community, practising and trainee teachers, and education policy makers.

Life often seems to be little more than a droning continuum irregularly interrupted by moments of intense feeling, excitement, and insight. In Cut Up on Copacabana, three interlocking sets of texts by professional boxer and professor of French literature David Scott (“Travel Notes,” “Boxing Rings,” and “Schoolboy Rites of Passage”) explore such singular moments. Whether he is examining Mt. Fuji in the footsteps of Hokusai, reflecting on the “firsts” of childhood, or meditating on the meaning of the violence and rigorous discipline of boxing, Scott writes with extraordinary verve and candor.

The Education System in Mexico

The Education System in Mexico

Over the past three decades, a significant amount of research has sought to relate educational institutions, policies, practices, and reforms to social structures and agencies. A number of models have been developed that have become the basis for attempting to understand the complex relation between education and society. At the same time, national and international bodies tasked with improving educational performances seem to be writing in a void, in that there is no rigorous theory guiding their work, and their documents exhibit few references to groups, institutions and forces that can impede or promote their programs and projects. As a result, the recommendations these bodies provide to their clients display little to no comprehension of how and under what conditions the recommendations can be put into effect. The Education System in Mexico directly addresses this problem. By combining abstract insights with the practicalities of educational reforms, policies, practices, and their social antecedents, it offers a long overdue reflection of the history, effects and significance of the Mexican educational system, as well as presenting a more cogent understanding of the relationship between educational institutions and social forces in Mexico and around the world.
