In the 1980s David Thomas was an unemployed plumber with a seemingly impossible dream: to become a fashion stylist. He ran away to London, landed a job selling cassettes in Tower Records, spent weekends and evenings washing dishes and working as a lavatory attendant, and every spare moment hammering on the doors of fashion editors until one of them opened a tiny crack. As well as telling the touching and funny story of the “Billy Elliot of fashion’s” bumpy ride to success, Vanity Project examines the fascinating relationship between the fairytale worlds fashion and celebrity. It describes how the discipline of styling has evolved from the 1980s to now, from the streets of London to the red carpets of Hollywood. This story is told largely in the words of those in the front row seats: actors, musicians, designers, photographers, editors, directors, artists, and music business power brokers. In short, people who have shaped popular culture over more than three decades. This beautifully designed book features more than 300 iconic images – photographs, sketches, magazine covers, Polaroids, iPhone snaps, and press cuttings – that illustrate the creative process from the mind of the stylist and the client's brief to the end result. The rich visual archive is brought right up to date with a specially commissioned portfolio of never-before-seen portraits by some of the world's leading contemporary photographers. Vanity Project is a tale of stars, of clothes, and of the skill and sweat that goes into creating those glittering moments on stage and screen. Above all, it’s the story of how, with the right kind of help and belief, one boy’s dream came true. The publisher will donate 10% of the cover price to The Prince’s Trust. The total amount donated to The Prince’s Trust is expected to be £5 per book. The purpose of the Ethics of Human Development Workbook is to help you identify what you should know and doin order to serve both yourself and the various organizations of which you are a part. One of the key assumptions of The Ethics of Human Development Training Program is that the ethical path is the path most likely to serve both you and your organization(s) over the long run.The workbook is one part of The Ethics of Human Development Training Program. However, the Workbook can be used on its own. It presents and explains the ethics of human development and it invites a close review of one's relationship with whatever organization is under consideration.Individuals interested in applying the ethics of human development to their work-life will find the Workbook useful, as will organizational personnel and trainers interested in furthering ethical cultures in organizations.

The Ethics of Human Development Training Program

The Ethics of Human Development Training Program is detailed in this book. The purpose of the program is one, to teach the ethics of human development and two, to build ethical cultures within organizations. What are the ethics of human development? They are the rules that guide us as we attempt to promote growth in ourselves while also serving the organizations and communities of which we are a part. The ethics of human development could be called the ethics of personal responsibility, the ethics of self-actualization, the ethics of teamwork and collaboration. By whatever name, they are the ethics by which we educate, mature and enlighten ourselves. An ethical culture is a culture continuously in the process of minimizing its self- destructiveness (fraud, libel, theft, negligence, abuse, etc.) while at the same time maximizing its prospects for survival and success. It is a culture actively involved in supporting the ethical growth and development of its members. This book defines and clarifies the ethics of human development while also providing the tools and processes integral to building ethical organizational cultures. Hopefully, it can be of use to individuals, teachers, trainers and human resource personnel interested in providing ethics of human development training in their organizations and classrooms. "... higher than the life of art is the art of life. And ethics is the lore of the art of life." (Will Durant) The ethics of human development are a part of that lore, fundamental to it, I believe. My hope is that this training program can be of benefit in significant ways to the individuals and organizations that are drawn to it.

Among homiletical commentaries this one stands supreme for many reasons. The author opens doors and challenges the reader to a vigorous investigation. His conclusions, often startling, illuminate the Gospel clearly. Instead of verbosity, he expresses much in few words. Dr. Thomas is practical and provides excellent stimulus for sermon preparation. His powerful, yet restrained imagination, presses into its service all nature, life, science, art and history. After thoroughly grasping his theme, he pours his soul into it, develops it in a logical manner, and enunciates his 123 discourses with thrilling effect.

Right Livelihood: The Twelve Ethics of Work

In Right Livelihood, a young man learns from his beloved Uncle the ethics of right livelihood. The young man learns how to work in accord with what his Uncle calls human logic, the logic by which we educate, mature and enlighten ourselves. To work in accord with human logic, contends the Uncle, is to serve both the workplace and the individual over the long run. Economist E.F. Schumacher said that work exists for the refinement of character. Right Livelihood presents twelve ethics that together constitute an elaborated work ethic. When embraced, these ethics further the refinement character while also furthering effective and creative involvement with the organization or workplace. This small book is ideal for high school seniors, college and university students, organizational development specialists, human resource personnel and others interested in how best to operate in the workplace. Lest there be any confusion, however, the ethics discussed in Right Livelihood are not only for those about to enter the world of work, but also for those well established in their work life.
Relaxation and the Pursuit of Wellbeing

Relaxation and the Pursuit of Wellbeing

The purpose of this book is twofold: first, to teach "profound relaxation," an extremely useful skill and for most people, an easy one to learn; and second, to discuss "differential relaxation", the relaxation of everyday life. The first two chapters focus on profound relaxation. Their purpose is to teach you to relax deeply-body and mind-in a single session of fifteen to twenty minutes. Like meditation, profound relaxation is considered an anti-stress response as it leads to an overall calming or quieting of the nervous system. In addition to profound relaxation, this book-beginning with Chapter 3-introduces the notion of differential relaxation, what might be called the "at ease with yourself" mode of relaxation. Differential relaxation is not so much a skill as it is a way of being and doing. It means: Using only the tension and energy required to perform a given act properly, not over-doing and not forcing. Perhaps the most important question posed by this book is: How do you deal with the issues, situations, and factors that bring tension and anxiety into your life, the factors that threaten your wellbeing? This book provides exercises for identifying those factors and a strategy for addressing them. However, there are no quick fixes. Wellbeing is a journey. This book will help you with the path forward. Relaxation and the Pursuit of Wellbeing is designed for use by individuals, but can also be of use to therapists, counselors, and trainers when working with individuals or groups interested in reducing the tension and anxiety operating in their lives.

Crotch Thinking is the story of one baby boomer's sexuality from his third year to his seventieth. Repression, hormones, and cultural forces led to a shotgun marriage and two daughters he adored and abandoned for a second, trophy wife. Passionate pleasure with her obscured the permanent pain brought on by her alcohol and drug addictions and his codependence. Then, the joy of their son's open adoption was overshadowed by failed treatment attempts and professional ruin. After six decades he learned the difference between lust and love, but not in time to save his children from alcoholism, depression, obesity, and inability to trust. From this life millennial men can learn to reflect on their sexuality and communicate openly about it.
Fun, Taste, & Games

Fun, Taste, & Games

John Sharp; David Thomas

Reclaiming fun as a meaningful concept for understanding games and play."Fun" is somewhat ambiguous. If something is fun, is it pleasant? Entertaining? Silly? A way to trick students into learning? Fun also has baggage-it seems inconsequential, embarrassing, child's play. In Fun, Taste, & Games, John Sharp and David Thomas reclaim fun as a productive and meaningful tool for understanding and appreciating play and games. They position fun at the heart of the aesthetics of games. As beauty was to art, they argue, fun is to play and games-the aesthetic goal that we measure our experiences and interpretations against. Sharp and Thomas use this fun-centered aesthetic framework to explore a range of games and game issues-from workplace bingo to Meow Wolf, from basketball to Myst, from the consumer marketplace to Marcel Duchamp. They begin by outlining three elements for understanding the drive, creation, and experience of fun: set-outsideness, ludic forms, and ambiguity. Moving from theory to practice and back again, they explore the complicated relationships among the titular fun, taste, and games. They consider, among other things, the dismissal of fun by game journalists and designers; the seminal but underinfluential game Myst, and how tastes change over time; the shattering of the gamer community in Gamergate; and an aesthetics of play that goes beyond games.
