Keeping the Struggle Alive

When students in a New Jersey public middle school decided to learn about their community's history of desegregation through a year-long language arts and social studies project, no one imagined how powerful the experience would be for everyone involved. In addition to digging up newspaper articles and historical documents, they interviewed town residents who had participated in the struggle to desegregate schools up North. They soon learned how everyday people became activists, how a bus could symbolize political struggle, and how the fight for full integration is never over. One of the few studies available on desegregation in the North, Keeping the Struggle Alive honors the voices the students discovered in their community for their civic courage and offers valuable eye-witness reports and documentation of one community's struggle with school integration. In addition, it provides a hands-on oral history guide that can be applied to any classroom or community that wants to involve youth in social action projects especially those involving race relations and integration. Finally, it is a testament to the kind of real learning that takes place when school projects are designed by, with, and for young people.

Bridging the gap between child development and strategies for inclusion, this volume is designed to help early childhood practitioners and pre-service teachers feel better equipped to meet the needs of all the children in their early childhood setting. APEEC is the first measurement scale designed to evaluate the use of developmentally appropriate practices in the early elementary classroom (K–3). Developed for classrooms serving both children with and without disabilities, the APEEC can be used by administrators and researchers to evaluate the degree of developmental appropriateness in inclusive and general education classrooms. It can also be used by teachers as a self-assessment tool. The book includes a carefully thought-out score sheet, which can be photocopied for use in rating classrooms.Featuring straightforward language and an easy-to-follow format, APEEC is organized under three main categories:1;Physical Environment—room arrangement, display of child products (e.g., artwork), classroom accessibility, health and safety2;Instructional Context—use of materials and computers, monitoring child progress, teacher-child language, instructional methods, integration and breadth of subjects3;Social Context—children's role in decision-making, participation of children with disabilities, social skills, diversity, transitions between activities, and family involvementThe authors used a multi-step process to develop the APEEC, including a thorough review of the relevant literature (particularly the NAEYC guidelines and early childhood special education literature); an extensive review of the scale by practitioners, researchers, and board members of professional organizations and research journals; and field testing in 69 classrooms.

Bronze Age Warfare

Bronze Age Warfare

Sutton Publishing Ltd
2001
sidottu
Using the surviving evidence of conflict and battle - fortifications, weapons and armour, burials and human remains - this study offers an insight into war and society in Europe during the Bronze Age. The authors seek to understand the role played by aggression and war the prehistoric world. Aiming for a balanced view of warfare, by looking at the range of significant evidence from across Europe, they interpret the wealth of archaeological material to investigate how sites were defended, what weapons were used, how they were used, where fighting took place, what types of injuries were sustained, how warriors were treated in death, how warfare was represented, and what role it played in ancient European societies. The text reviews the research in the field and describes the sometimes controversial interpretations that have led to rapid advances in our understanding of society and conflict in the ancient world.

sidottu
A systematic account of the importance of sociology for the understanding of scientific knowledge. Applying sociological analysis to specific historical case studies, the work attempts to show how the sociological approach is an essential complement to interpretations of scientific knowledge from other disciplines, and a necessary contribution to obtaining a scientific understanding of science. This book should be of interest to students in the social sciences and the history and philosophy of science, and to academics interested in knowledge, epistemology, the history of ideas and the "new" sociology of science.

Bayesian Multiple Target Tracking

Bayesian Multiple Target Tracking

Lawrence D. Stone; etc.; Carl A. Barlow; Thomas L. Corwin

Artech House
1999
sidottu
Using the Bayesian inference framework, this book enables the reader to design and develop mathematically sound algorithms for dealing with tracking problems involving multiple targets, multiple sensors, and multiple platforms. It shows how non-linear Multiple Hypothesis Tracking and the Theory of United Tracking are successful methods when multiple target tracking must be performed without contacts or association. With detailed examples illustrating the developed concepts, algorithms, and approaches, the book helps the reader track when observations are non-linear functions of target site, when the target state distributions or measurements error distributions are not Gaussian, when notions of contact and association are merged or unresolved among more than one target, and in low data rate and low signal to noise ratio situations.
