James Joyce's writings centre on the city of Dublin, where he was born into a middle-class family in 1882. Despite this preoccupation, he left Dublin for the continent in 1904 and spent most of his life abroad. Joyce first caught the attention of critics with 'Dubliners', a brilliant collection of short stories, and rapidly grew in fame and status with his ground-breaking stream-of-consciousness style and the explicit content of his prose in such works as 'Ulysses' and 'Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man'. 'The Dead' is universally acknowledged as one of his best works, both in its style and emotional intensity. It tells the tale of one evening in the life of Gabriel Conroy at a dinner party, and an ensuing conversation with his wife Gretta that sparks feelings of the utter solitude and, paradoxically, of the interconnectedness of humanity. Also included in this collection are the following stories: "After the race", "Araby", "The Boarding House", "Clay", "Counterparts", "An Encounter", "Eveline", "A Little Cloud", and "Two Gallants".

James Joyce's Ulysses is considered one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century. This new edition - published to celebrate the book's first publication - helps readers to understand the pleasures of this monumental work and to grapple with its challenges. Copiously equipped with maps, photographs, and explanatory footnotes, it provides a vivid and illuminating context for the experiences of Leopold Bloom, Stephen Dedalus, and Molly Bloom, as well as Joyce's many other Dublin characters, on June 16, 1904. Featuring a facsimile of the historic 1922 Shakespeare and Company text, this version also includes Joyce's own errata as well as references to amendments made in later editions. Each of the eighteen chapters of Ulysses is introduced by a leading Joyce scholar. These richly informative pieces discuss the novel's plot and allusions, while also explaining crucial questions that have puzzled and tantalized readers over the last hundred years.

Finnegans Wake is one of the most difficult works of fiction in the Western canon. There are four Parts or Books and seventeen chapters total in Finnegans Wake. The chapters lack titles, and while Joyce didn't offer potential chapter titles as he had for Ulysses, he did give titles to several portions that were published separately. Part 1: Dublin hod carrier "Finnegan," Joyce's central figure, perishes after falling from a ladder while building a wall. HCE's wife ALP accuses him of being a scam after having her son Shem transcribe a letter about him and give it to another son Shaun. Part 2: The primary protagonists are Shem, Shaun, and Issy, who are banished from their home by their parents after they misjudged the color of a girl's eyes based on their "gaze work." HCE is a Norwegian Captain who, via his marriage to a tailor's daughter, became domesticated. Part 3: The Four Masters' Ass describes how he believed he had heard and seen Shaun the Post's ghost while he was "falling asleep." Part 4: The book is written as a collection of short stories, and it opens with a plea for daybreak. The river Liffey, represented by ALP, flows into the ocean at dawn to mark the end of Part IV.

V "Dublintsakh", sbornike rasskazov, napisannykh v 1904? 1907 godakh, no izdannykh tolko v 1914-m, nam javlen velikolepnyj master prozy. Dubliners is a collection of fifteen short stories by James Joyce. The stories comprise a naturalistic depiction of Irish middle class life in and around Dublin in the early years of the 20th century. The stories were written when Irish nationalism was at its peak, and a search for a national identity and purpose was raging; at a crossroads of history and culture, Ireland was jolted by various converging ideas and influences. They centre on Joyce's idea of an epiphany: a moment where a character experiences a life-changing self-understanding or illumination, and the idea of paralysis where Joyce felt Irish nationalism stagnated cultural progression, placing Dublin at the heart of this regressive movement.

Welcome to the 7 Best Short Stories book series, were we present to you the best works of remarkable authors. This edition is dedicated to James Joyce. James Joyce was an Irish, modernist writer who wrote in a ground-breaking style that was known both for its complexity and explicit content. He also participated in the early days of poetic modernism in the English language, being considered by Ezra Pound one of the most eminent poets of imagism. Although Joyce has lived outside his native Irish island for most of adult life, his Irish identity was essential to his work and provide him with all the ambiance and much of the theme of his work. His fictional universe is rooted heavily in Dublin and reflects his family life and events, friendships and enmities from school and college times. In this way, he is at the same time one of the most cosmopolitan and one of the most particularists of the modernist authors of English language. In this anthology the critic August Nemo presents seven short stories that bring the most emblematic elements of the style of this important author: The Sisters, Eveline, Araby, A Painful Case, The Dead, Two Gallants and After the Race. Bonus: James Joyce's Amazing Chronicle by Joseph Collins and James Joyce by John Macy. If you appreciate good literature, be sure to check out the other Tacet Books titles

Living overseas but writing, always, about his native city, Joyce made Dublin unforgettable. The stories in Dubliners show us truants, seducers, gossips, rally-drivers, generous hostesses, corrupt politicians, failing priests, amateur theologians, struggling musicians, moony adolescents, victims of domestic brutishness, sentimental aunts and poets, patriots earnest or cynical, and people striving to get by. In every sense an international figure, Joyce was faithful to his own country by seeing it unflinchingly and challenging every precedent and piety in Irish literature.
