This book was written for people who enjoy thinking. Though vicarious, the stories become real once read, entering into the reader's memory as experience. A good story well-read thus becomes an actual experience. Personal enrichment thusly follows. Each story revolves around its central characters, complex people who are in deep conflict and are struggling, often heroically. The physical settings act as a frame for pertinent central points. By engaging with this material, the reader develops an increased inner strength. Elements of these stories include sexual dysfunction, alcoholism, prostitution, panic, dislocation, the Supernatural, angst, frustration, despair, the war in Vietnam, the life of a young man growing up in a tough Depression Era town in Washington State, the killing of a town bully and his subsequent resurrection, and the struggles of a former guerilla fighter/spook/killer's relationship with his homosexual son. These stories will broaden the intellect, increase the capacity for human emotion, and take the reader to places otherwise not encountered. The book has wings. Fly it and see where it takes you.

In Tasmania, John Cook is known as 'The Keeper of the Flame'. As one of Australia's longest-serving lighthouse keepers, John spent 26 years tending Tasmania's well-known kerosene 'lights' at Tasman Island, Maatsuyker Island and Bruny Island. From sleepless nights keeping the lights alive, battling the wind and sea as they ripped at gutters and flooded stores, raising a joey, tending sheep and keeping ducks and chickens, the life of a keeper was one of unexpected joy and heartbreak. But for John, nothing was more heartbreaking than the introduction of electric lights, and the lighthouses that were left empty forever.Evocatively told, The Last Lighthouse Keeper is a love story between a man and a dying way of life, as well as a celebration of wilderness and solitude.

Since becoming the Nebraska women’s volleyball coach in 2000, John Cook has led the team to four national championships, seven NCAA semifinal appearances, and the nation’s top winning percentage in women’s volleyball. In Dream Like a Champion Cook shares the coaching and leadership philosophy that has enabled him to become one of the game’s winningest coaches. Growing up in San Diego, Cook acquired his coaching philosophy from his experiences first as a football coach, then as a student of the sport of volleyball on the beaches of Southern California. After a stint as an assistant volleyball coach at Nebraska, he returned to Nebraska as head coach in 2000 and won the national championship in his first season. Even with a bar set so high, Cook saw at Nebraska’s tradition-rich program the potential for even greater growth and success. He decided to focus on higher expectations, training, motivation, goal setting, and other ways to build the strongest teams possible. In Dream Like a Champion Cook shares the philosophy behind Nebraska’s culture of success and reveals how he’s had to learn, evolve, and be coached himself, even in his fifth decade as a coach. With openness and candor he delivers insights about his methods and passes along lessons that can be used by leaders in any field. Cook also shares behind-the-scenes anecdotes about Nebraska volleyball moments and players-and how he coaches and teaches his players about life beyond the court. This paperback edition features a new chapter about the 2017 national championship season.

Cancer-A Strange Gift: ''You have at best 9 to 12 months to live ''--20 years later, here's my story!
'Cancer - A Strange Gift' was written as a result of my personal experience over 20 years ago. A 'blind faith' existed, and still does, in the infallible treatment of Western doctrines by doctors for their patients woes; I was dying because of this 'faith' and my ignorance of its fallibility With a lifetime's experience spent battling various autocratic disciples of The Establishment and witnessing the extraordinary lengths they will go to, to protect their own esteem, I concluded that by writing my own story, I just might gain an entr e into the patient's world. My book establishes, via my direct contact through counselling of patients and by my being on the receiving end of the doctors' disciplines, the validity of my thinking. During my fight to prolong my life beyond the nine month oncological prediction given in September 1995, both my Eastern, and eventually, my Western doctors asked me for help in providing confidence to some of their patients. I soon discovered that I was indeed able to help, and that by reading the draft of my own encounter with doom, those with whom I came into contact gained the strength they needed to acquire positive thinking for themselves. The decision to write my story is due to my indignation of my own foolish ignorance of health at that time and the wish to help others as a result of my learning. There is the beginning of an awareness within the Bioscience world, of which I am part through my stemcell research company, that medicine as practiced now, needs to involve more patient participation with a greater case for prevention and an understanding of cause versus treatment of symptom. I believe that my encounter and story may have a part to play, to help people with both resolve and strength when facing adversity.

Climate change is one of the most controversial and misunderstood issues of the 21st century. This book provides a clear understanding of the issue by presenting scientific facts to refute falsehoods and misinformation—and to confirm the validity of other assertions. Is public understanding of global warming suffering from politically biased news coverage? Is it true that the global scientific community has not reached a consensus on whether humans are causing climate change? This important book addresses these questions and many more about global warming, identifying common claims about climate change and using quantifiable, evidence-based information to examine their veracity. The authors of this work examine 35 specific claims that have been made about global climate change by believers and skeptics. These assertions—some true, some false—will guide readers to a much deeper understanding of the extent of climate change; whether any climate change that is taking place is human-caused; whether climate change is likely to be a serious problem in the future; whether scientists agree on the fundamentals of climate change; and whether climate change impacts can be mitigated. Examples of specific issues that are scrutinized and explained in the book include: trends in the extent and condition of Arctic and Antarctic Sea ice packs, the accuracy of climate forecasting models, whether extreme weather events are increasing as a result of climate change, and the benefits and drawbacks of various schemes to limit greenhouse gas emissions.
