John Gilbert

This Handbook provides essential practical information for State Control Laboratories and for others concerned with ensuring compliance with European Community Directive 90/128 relating to plastics materials and articles intended to come into contact with foodstuffs. The Handbook begins with a chapter giving practical advice on the sampling of retail packaging, determining the identity of the plastics and thus ascertaining which monomer residues are likely to be present. For every monomer or starting substance listed in 90/128, Annex A, there is an entry in the Handbook giving the structure, formulae, CAS, PM number and trivial name, together with information on physical characteristics, storage, stability and safety. Information is provided on known applications of the substances and the food contact uses of the derived plastics materials. There is a brief description of the analytical approach for testing compliance with SML or QM limits, and references to the published literature as well as indications of laboratories presently contracted by BCR to undertake method development. Infrared spectra and electron ionization mass spectra are provided in a standard format for each substance and, in some cases, the IR spectra of the parent polymers are given. Most of the 166 substances listed in the Handbook will be made available upon request as reference standards as either the pure substance or as a calibrant solution.

The U. S. hockey team's victory at the 1980 Olympics was a "Miracle on Ice"--a miracle largely brought about by the late Herb Brooks, the legendary coach who forged that invincible team. Neither strictly biography or tell-all expose, Herb Brooks: Born to Coach is the story of an extraordinary man as it emerged in the course of a remarkable friendship. Gilbert, writing for the Minneapolis Tribune, first met Brooks during his coaching days at the University of Minnesota, whose hockey program he resurrected in the 1970's. The two became fast friends, and here, for the first time, Gilbert relates anecdotes--his own and former players'--that illuminate Brooks' oftentimes hard-nosed coaching methods, his dramatic successes, and his incomparable character. From Brooks' beginnings in East St.Paul and his stint with the 1960 gold medal-winning Olympic team (from which he was famously the last player cut), Gilbert goes on to dissect the coach's tenure with the Gophers (including three national titles) and the Lake Placid story, from the selection process and yearlong barnstorming tour to the Games themselves. Throughout this and later chapters of Brooks' career--including coaching turns with St. Cloud State University, four NHL teams, and the 2002 U.S. Olympic squad--readers are treated to impossibly colorful quotes, rare photographs from Brooks' playing and coaching careers, and pertinent sidebar pieces that originally appeared in the Minneapolis Tribune.

What are the choices the Asia-Pacific community will face if it proceeds further down the path of developing preferential regional trading arrangements? Fragmentation of the region into preferential trading arrangements on a bilateral or subregional basis promises relatively little economic gain and considerable risk of increased trade conflict. Larger preferential trading blocs, spanning the whole of East Asia, the Western Pacific, or the APEC membership, offer greater potential economic benefits but also face formidable political obstacles. In this study, Scollay and Gilbert weigh the economic consequences of the increased use of preferential trading arrangements in the Asia-Pacific region, whether these develop on the basis of trans-Pacific cooperation or solely within the East Asian or Western Pacific sub-regions. They evaluate the economic effects of both the existing proposals for new bilateral and multilateral agreements and of more far-reaching developments involving the creation of a substantial trading bloc or blocs in the region.Comparisons between the economic effects of establishing such bloc(s) in the region and the effects of achieving APEC's Bogor goals on the basis of "open regionalism" suggest that the latter approach continues to offer a worthwhile alternative. The study demonstrates that the benefits of global free trade dominate those available from establishment of any combination of major blocs or from APEC's "open regionalism".

This text proposes a model of teacher development as social, personal and professional development, and is based on the findings of a three year New Zealand research project. The project investigated the teacher development of some teachers of science working to: implement the findings of the previous "Learning in Science" projects; take into account students' thinking; and base their thinking on a constructivist view of learning. The factors that helped teacher development are discussed as is a view of learning to underpin teacher development. This book is intended to be of interest to teachers, teacher educators, teacher developers, school managers and policy makers working in all curriculum areas.
