This textbook assumes very little knowledge of programming so whether you have dabbled with a little JavaScript, played with a bit of Python, written Java or have virtually no programming experience at all you will find that it is for you.The first part of the book introduces Kotlin program structures as well as conditional flow of control features such as if and when expressions as well as iteration loops such as for, while and do-while. Subsequent chapters explain how functions are implemented in Kotlin and introduce concepts from functional programming such as higher order functions and curried functions. The second part focusses on object oriented programming techniques, these include classes, inheritance, abstraction and interfaces. The third part presents container data types such as Arrays, and collections including Lists, Sets and Maps and the fourth part considers concurrency and parallelism using Kotlin coroutines. The book concludes with anintroduction to Android mobile application development using Kotlin.Clear steps are provided explaining how to set up your environment and get started writing your own Kotlin programs. An important aspect of the book is teaching by example and there are many examples presented throughout the chapters. These examples are supported by a public GitHub repository that provides complete working code as well as sample solutions to the chapter exercises. This helps illustrate how to write well structured, clear, idiomatic Kotlin to build real applications.
Kyle didn't like being told what to do. When his brother demanded that he get himself home right now, no stopping, no passing GO and no collecting two-hundred dollars, the order didn't sit well with him. So, he stopped at a bar in an unknown town. He met a girl. They drank, left, did drugs together, and when he awoke in the morning, her decapitated head lay in his lap. As he pieces together what happened the night before, a police cruiser rolls in behind him. From that moment, the chase is on. What Kyle doesn't know is that he isn't the only killer in town.
Charles Knight is released from an especially unpleasant stay in prison, only to rejoin a society overwhelmed by looting, riots, arson, viral panic, mob-think and economic decay . . . with a presidential election in the balance. The cronies are in charge, abetted by their media lackeys and political puppets. They'll do anything to get what they want. How can Charles stop the deadly crimes committed by those who control the law, print the money, and confuse the minds of the people? Crimes that push millions into poverty, servitude and ignorance. Will a highly unorthodox presidential candidate and a cryptocurrency network that turns the surveillance state on its head be enough to expose and defeat them? Or do some people just need to be killed? The cronies are moving fast. Charles Knight needs to move faster.

‘When an accident occurs, something may emerge of lasting value, for the human spirit may rise to its greatest heights. This happened on Haramosh.’The Last Blue Mountain is the heart-rending true story of the 1957 expedition to Mount Haramosh in the Karakoram range in Pakistan. With the summit beyond reach, four young climbers are about to return to camp. Their brief pause to enjoy the view and take photographs is interrupted by an avalanche which sweeps Bernard Jillott and John Emery hundreds of feet down the mountain into a snow basin. Miraculously, they both survive the fall. Rae Culbert and Tony Streather risk their own lives to rescue their friends, only to become stranded alongside them. The group’s efforts to return to safety are increasingly desperate, hampered by injury, exhaustion and the loss of vital climbing gear. Against the odds, Jillott and Emery manage to climb out of the snow basin and head for camp, hoping to reach food, water and assistance in time to save themselves and their companions from an icy grave. But another cruel twist of fate awaits them.An acclaimed mountaineering classic in the same genre as Joe Simpson's Touching the Void, Ralph Barker’s The Last Blue Mountain is an epic tale of friendship and fortitude in the face of tragedy.

The North British Railway's West Highland Line, stretching from the banks of the Firth of Clyde to Fort William, opened in 1894, and was subsequently extended to the fishing port of Mallaig on the Atlantic coast in 1901. It is this latter part of the `Iron Road to the Isles' that forms the major part of this book, hailed as one of the most scenic railway routes in the British Isles. Steam trains returned to the Mallaig line in 1984, eventually becoming the celebrated `Jacobite' service. Now an integral and indispensible part of the Scottish tourist scene, the trains run from Easter to Christmas and the New Year, twice daily during the peak season. In this superbly illustrated portrait of the line, 35 of the UK's top railway photographers have contributed pictures to create a quite stunning pictorial record. The great variety of photographic styles, using the route's many glorious vantage points, provides a mesmerising mix of unforgettable images, not just of the steam trains themselves but also the majestic Scottish landscape through which they run.
