The Duchess of Malfi is a Jacobean revenge tragedy written by English dramatist John Webster in 1612-1613. It was first performed privately at the Blackfriars Theatre, then later to a larger audience at The Globe, in 1613-1614. Published in 1623, the play is loosely based on events that occurred between 1508 and 1513 surrounding Giovanna d'Aragona, Duchess of Amalfi (d. 1511), whose father, Enrico d'Aragona, Marquis of Gerace, was an illegitimate son of Ferdinand I of Naples. As in the play, she secretly married Antonio Beccadelli di Bologna after the death of her first husband Alfonso I Piccolomini, Duke of Amalfi. The play begins as a love story, when the Duchess marries beneath her class, and ends as a nightmarish tragedy as her two brothers undertake their revenge, destroying themselves in the process. Jacobean drama continued the trend of stage violence and horror set by Elizabethan tragedy, under the influence of Seneca. The complexity of some of the play's characters, particularly Bosola and the Duchess, and Webster's poetic language, have led many critics to consider The Duchess of Malfi among the greatest tragedies of English renaissance drama.

Animal Welfare An Accessible Overview of the Concept of Sentience Throughout the Animal Kingdom and Why It Matters to Humans Animal Welfare explores the concept of sentience and the development of sentient minds throughout the animal kingdom. The work provides improved definitions and analysis of the ideas of sentience, cognition, and consciousness, along with evidence of advanced mental formulation in birds, fish, and invertebrates. Considerations between humans and animals are also discussed, such as outcome-based ethics in relation to humans’ duties of care and the rights and wrongs of domestication. The work is divided into three parts and covers key topics such as: Specifics of animal sentience, from pain and suffering, to fear and dread, all the way to animals’ social life and the comfort/joy/hope/despair they experience What we know about the sentience of different classes of animals in the waters, air, savannah/plains, and forests Considerations on human interactions based on animal sentience, including death (killing), animal farms, animals in laboratories, wild animals in captivity, and animals in sports and entertainment Analysis on what humans can learn from animals based on what we know about their varying levels of sentience Animal Welfare serves as an invaluable analysis of animal sentience for students, teachers, and professionals directly involved in the study, teaching, and applications of animal behavior, motivation, and welfare. Thanks to the wide-ranging implications of animal sentience, the work will also appeal to everyone with a broader interest in animal behavior and human/animal interactions.
It started like any other day, but this time when I looked in the bathroom mirror, I paused to take more than a fleeting glance. I hardly recognized myself. How did I gain so much weight? How did I let this happen? My happy family, work and social life operated as blinders. It was easy to overlook physical health. Not anymore. Something had to change. I ate nutritious food and exercised, mostly at low intensity. There were no fad diets or ab busters. I took a slow and sustainable approach, without looking for the quick fix. There were setbacks along the way. I got in touch with physicality. I fell in love with distance running and enjoyed plenty of time to think. I had studied philosophy decades earlier, before getting busy with family and work. Life's big questions once animated my thoughts, but they had long ago receded into the depths of my mind. Those faint memories started to bubble back up to the surface. An eclectic set of experiences sparked a personal epiphany about wellness. It was an "a-ha" moment for me. I saw a way to work towards balance between eight facets of wellness. I'm filled with optimism about the journey to come.- Website: accidentallywell.com

This fully re-edited, modernised play text is accompanied by insightful commentary notes, while its lively introduction explains why Webster’s interests in complex female lead characters and questions of social tension related to sexuality, gender, race, and law and equity – unusual for the play’s time – have led to its increasing relevance for modern audiences and readers. Exploring the challenges of staging this highly melodramatic play, Lara Bovilsky guides you through the most interesting points of its rich performance history, and explores the onslaught of recent productions with race-conscious and regendered casts. Analysing its masterful poetry, she shows how the work can be harnessed to engage debate about the abuse of political and religious authority, the troubling fruits of economic desperation, and personal freedom, and empowers you to do likewise.Supplemented by a plot summary, annotated bibliography, production images, and essential contextual grounding in the court scandals that inspired Webster’s tragedy and Webster’s unusual composition practices, this edition is the most enlightening and engaging you will find.
The church's vocation is to treasure the gospel and live it out. The late theologian John Webster believed Christian preachers and theologians should be principally concerned with the proclamation of this news. At the center of that proclamation is our salvation in Christ. In this compilation of homilies, John Webster explores the various contours of the salvation accomplished for us in Christ and displays for preachers a model of theological exegesis that understands that the gospel is the heart of holy Scripture. Readers of Christ Our Salvation will be presented with a feast of "theological" theology for Christian proclamation.
