In the spring of 1689, Basho set off from Tokyo on a now-famous pilgrimage: this epic walk, spanning about 1500 miles, took him to the deep north of Honshu, and then back along the island's western coast and finally down to Lake Biwa. Along his route he encountered friends and fellow travelers, the changing seasons and terrains, renowned sites (temples, waterfalls, landmarks), a few perils, and many enthralling moments of total peace, delight, beauty, and introspection. Basho--Zen Buddhist, ardent walker, master of the haiku--follows the calling of the road, finding incredible joy in his freedom and drinking in brief glimmers of transient perfection.

"The travel writings of Matsuo Basho are of enormous literary importance, and so it is a joy to see them collected in this compact volume, in translations of exemplary elegance, faithfulness, and accessibility. The annotations are especially valuable: they show a solid grasp of the author’s life, work, and times, and provide rich and detailed background information about allusions to Chinese and Japanese classics. Along with the high quality of the translations themselves, this thorough commentary makes the book a significant scholarly resource and will help readers appreciate the density and delicacy of Basho’s writing. A very welcome addition to the English-language literature on one of the central poets of the Japanese tradition." —David B. Lurie, Columbia University

Japanese poetry is known for its clarity and concision, and Narrow Road to the Interior and Hōjōki are two of the best loved and most intensely Japanese works of their kind; famous for their beautiful, delicate verse and subtle insight into the human condition. It has been said of Narrow Road that it was as if the very soul of Japan had itself written it. The poem takes the form of a travel diary and traces the poet's journey from Edo (modern day Tokyo) to the northern interior of the country.Hōjōki, a much earlier work written by Kamo no Chōmei, a Buddhist hermit, is essentially a meditation on the transience of the world. Read by the famous classical Japanese actor Togo Igawa, the full beauty of its ancient cadences and rhythms is drawn forth.
The Narrow Road to the Deep North and Other Travel Sketches
In his perfectly crafted haiku poems, Basho described the natural world with great simplicity and delicacy of feeling. When he composed The Narrow Road to the Deep North he was a serious student of Zen Buddhism setting off on a series of travels designed to strip away the trappings of the material world and bring spiritual enlightenment. He wrote of the seasons changing, of the smell of the rain, the brightness of the moon and the beauty of the waterfall, through which he sensed the mysteries of the universe. These travel writings not only chronicle Basho's perilous journeys through Japan, but also capture his vision of eternity in the transient world around him.

A beautiful translation of one of the most-loved classics of Japanese literature. Here is the most complete single-volume collection of the writings of one of the great luminaries of Asian literature. Basho (1644-1694)--who elevated the haiku to an art form of utter simplicity and intense spiritual beauty--is best known in the West as the author of Narrow Road to the Interior, a travel diary of linked prose and haiku that recounts his journey through the far northern provinces of Japan. This volume includes a masterful translation of this celebrated work along with three other less well-known but important works by Basho: Travelogue of Weather-Beaten Bones, The Knapsack Notebook, and Sarashina Travelogue. There is also a selection of over two hundred and fifty of Basho's finest haiku. In addition, the translator has provided an introduction detailing Basho's life and work and an essay on the art of haiku.
