Dorothy and Leonard Elmhirst were the founders of Dartington - she the daughter of an American millionaire who was once Secretary to the US Navy; he the son of a Yorkshire parson and secretary to Rabindranath Tagore in Bengal before he married Dorothy. They were the twentieth century’s most substantial private patrons of architecture in England as well as of the arts and education.Dartington School was one of the most famous experimental schools in the world. Bertrand Russell sent his children there, as did Aldous Huxley and the Freuds. Dartington College of Arts and its associated Summer School of Music were equally famous in the world of the arts. Bernard Leach taught pottery, Mark Tobey painting, and Imogen Holst music. The Amadeus Quartet was formed there. Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears were frequent performers. In a setting of great beauty, school and college belonged to a general experiment in rural reconstruction. Dartington Glass was made in the Devonshire countryside and exported world-wide. So were Dartington Textiles, Dartington Furniture and Dartington Pottery. This book, originally published in 1982 (and reissued in 1996), describes how a unique combination of education, arts, industry and agriculture came to be put together. The result was one of the hardiest Utopian communities of modern times. It eventually overcame the strong local opposition to such a daring undertaking. The author finds the origins of modern Dartington in the founders’ hopes that mankind would be liberated through education; that a new flowering of the arts would transform a society impoverished by industrialisation and secularisation; and that a society seeking to draw together town and country would combine the best of both worlds. This book is an extraordinary memoir of two people and the place they made.

After the meeting with Devila, Staracon realized that he had burned many bridges. He planned the greatest war of the universe. While traveling back to the Realm of Hell (Inferno), Devila had a smile on her face with the satisfaction of knowing that she would destroy Staracon. Staracon stayed in the throne room of his castle and thought about possible future events. "We have a lot of work to do," he said, rising out of his chair .It began to rain on Planet Gala and the rain was fierce as lighting and thunder continued to plague the planet. The storm approached with the power of the gods; they were punishing the planet for the sin that was caused. Staracon stepped outside the castle, landed on the countryside and watched his soldiers and the people who resided there. Water was piercing the planet like needles in the skin of everyone. Lightening continued to strike fiercely, hitting some who were in his path, killing people instantly. Staracon raised his hands. In attempt to control the weather, he focused his chi energy towards the sky and shot an energy blast towards the sky.

Circadian Rhythms

Circadian Rhythms

Our daily routines and physiological functions-and those of virtually all living organisms-are synchronized with the Earth's rotation about its axis. These include sleep patterns, hormone secretion, blood pressure, body temperature, and feeding behavior. Oscillations in these processes, or circadian rhythms, are controlled by molecular feedback loops that integrate with environmental and metabolic stimuli. Written and edited by experts in the field, this collection from Cold Spring Harbor Perspectives in Biology examines the molecular and cellular details of the oscillatory machinery and how they control aspects of our physiology. Contributors discuss the cell-autonomous generation of circadian time and how those mechanisms interact with circuit-level mechanisms in the suprachiasmatic nucleus. Links between circadian and redox systems, as well as the relationship between circadian oscillations and pathogenic infections, are also covered. In addition, the authors examine circadian rhythms in other species (e.g., plants and Drosophila) and how they enable the organisms to adapt to their environments. This volume will therefore serve as a valuable reference for not only neurobiologists and cell and molecular biologists, but all who wish to understand the clocks and rhythms of life.

The Rise of the Meritocracy

Michael Young has christened the oligarchy of the future "Meritocracy." Indeed, the word is now part of the English language. It would appear that the formula: IQ+Effort=Merit may well constitute the basic belief of the ruling class in the twenty-first century. Projecting himself into the year 2034, the author of this sociological satire shows how present decisions and practices may remold our society. It is widespread knowledge that it is insufficient to be somebody's nephew to obtain a responsible post in business, government, teaching, or science. Experts in education and selection apply scientific principles to sift out the leaders of tomorrow. You need intelligence rating, qualification, experience, application, and a certain caliber to achieve status. In a word, one must show merit to advance in the new society of tomorrow. In a new opening essay, Young reflects on the reception of his work, and its production, in a candid and lively way. Many of the critical ambiguities surrounding its original publication are now clarified and resolved. What we have is what the Guardian of London called "A brilliant essay." and what Time and Tide described as "a fountain gush of new ideas. Its wit and style make it compulsively enjoyable reading from cover to cover."
Service Charges in Commercial Properties
First Published in 1990. The practical nature of service charges and their interrelationship with accounting and landlord and tenant law renders the topic a particularly difficult one to be taught on undergraduate courses. Michael Young has however produced a readable and logically ordered monograph on the subject, which should enable those in other disciplines to understand the various aspects of service charges and those for whom it is their own discipline to have an accessible source of reference.
King James and the History of Homosexuality
James VI & I, the namesake of the King James Version of the Bible, had a series of notorious male favourites. No one denies that these relationships were amorous, but were they sexual? Michael B. Young merges political history with recent scholarship in the history of sexuality to answer that question. More broadly, he shows that James's favourites had a negative impact within the royal family, at court, in Parliament, and in the nation at large. Contemporaries raised the spectre of a sodomitical court and an effeminized nation; some urged James to engage in a more virile foreign policy by embarking on war. Queen Anne encouraged a martial spirit and moulded her oldest son to be more manly than his father. Repercussions continued after James's death, detracting from the majesty of the monarchy and contributing to the outbreak of the Civil War. Persons acquainted with the history of sexuality will find surprising premonitions here of modern homosexuality and homophobia. General readers will find a world of political intrigue coloured by sodomy, pederasty, and gender instability. For readers new to the subject, the book begins with a helpful overview of King James's life.

This second edition of the classic Universal Design in Higher Education is a comprehensive, up-to-the-minute guide for creating fully accessible college and university programs. The second edition has been thoroughly revised and expanded, and it addresses major recent changes in universities and colleges, the law, and technology. As larger numbers of people with disabilities attend postsecondary educational institutions, there have been comparable greater efforts to make the full array of classes, services, and programs accessible to all students. This revised edition provides both a full survey of those measures and practical guidance for schools as they work to turn the goal of universal accessibility into a reality. As such, it makes an indispensable contribution to the growing body of literature on special education and universal design. This book will be of particular value to university and college administrators, and to special education researchers, teachers, and activists.

This book presents a new way for educators at all levels - from early years to university - to think about curriculum priorities. It focuses on the curriculum as a form of specialised knowledge, optimally designed to enable students to gain access to the best knowledge available in any field.Papers jointly written by the authors over the last eight years are revised for this volume. It draws on the sociology of knowledge and in particular the work of Emile Durkheim and Basil Bernstein, opening up the possibilities for collaborative inter-disciplinary enquiry with historians, philosophers and psychologists. Although primarily directed to researchers, university teachers and graduate students, its arguments about specialised knowledge have profound implications for policy makers.
