This collection of critical thinking situates the satire of Jonathan Swift within both its eighteenth-century contexts and our modern anxieties about personal identity and communication. Augustan satire at its most provocative is not simply concerned with the public matters of politics or religion, but also offers a precise medium in which to express the paradox of ironic detachment amidst deep conviction. The critics chosen for this volume demonstrate the complexity of Swift's work. Its four sections explore matters of authorial identity, the relation between Swift's writing and its historical context, the full range of his comments on gender, and his deployment of metaphor and irony to engage the reader. Swift has often been regarded as a writer who anticipated many twentieth-century cultural preoccupations, and this volume provides an opportunity to test just how modern he actually was. It also provides an answer to those who would wish to simplify his writing as that of Tory and misogynist. The theoretical perspectives of the contributors are lucidly explained and their critical terms located in the wider contexts of contemporary theory in the introduction and headnotes. The volume places Swift historically within the philosophical and religious traditions of eighteenth-century thought.

This is the story of the milltown brothers meteoric rise and 'much ignored' demise. It's the story of a good band that got very lucky and then got very unlucky. More broadly it demonstrates the role luck plays in all our lives, every thought, breath and movement impacting on the way our futures unfold, however much we like to think we're in control. The first performance by any of the milltown brothers took place in the early summer of 1975 in the garage of the Nelson family home in Colne, Lancashire to the audience of Mum and Dad, and a neighbour. The band, charmingly named Cold Meat comprised elder brother and band Svengali Mark Nelson on lead guitar and vocals. Simon Nelson and neighbour Andy Marsden on drums. And Sarah and Matthew Nelson on air guitar. It was a 12-bar blues jam according to Mark. It's not clear what it was to Sarah or Matthew. This isn't a story about sex, drugs and rock n roll. It's much more interesting than that. The milltown brothers from Burnley in the north west of England were discovered by Steve Lamacq playing their fifth gig at the Bull & Gate in London in May 1988. Signed to A&M in 1990 for a GBP100,000 advance, they had a publishing deal with EMI and their debut album Slinky was awarded 5 stars in Q magazine - one of just three Q magazine gave during 1991.Not only did Jesus (William Gellert, known as Jesus, who, from the 1960s to the early 2000s, went to gigs all over London, dancing in a completely unhinged way and often naked) dance at least twice with the milltown brothers, Oasis supported them less than a year before the release of Definitely Maybe. Two years earlier, when they shared the bill with Nirvana and others in Boston, the day before Nirvana released the paradigm changing Nevermind in September 1991, the promoter described their performance as the event highlight. Relentlessly touring the UK, Europe, America and Japan they were on the cusp of global success... only to gloriously snatch utter anonymity from the jaws of immortality.

Chinese ceramics and their glazes have delighted and enthralled the world for centuries. In this book, Nigel Wood traces the development of Chinese glazes from the Bronze Age to the present day. He carefully describes how Chinese glazes were made, and how they evolved over some 3000 years of continuous production. He provides analyses and shows how their superb qualities can be reproduced with common Western raw materials. The book is lavishly illustrated with hundreds of colour plates of Chinese potters and Chinese kilns.

Through a close reading of Shakespeare's works, Nigel Wood argues for the power of Shakespeare's dramatic language to shape the consciousness of the audiences of his time and to play a role in the development of a public sphere in early modern England. He traces the verbal patterning and repetition of a range of keywords across plays, distinguishing between their accepted meaning and the potency of performance to introduce fluid nuances of meaning and significance. It takes seriously therefore the plays’ status as oral performances and the ways in which his language would have resonated with early modern audiences. Beginning by establishing an approach to Shakespeare’s playtexts from the perspective of an audience witnessing a gradually unfolding action, Wood addresses the power of language to create episodes of shock or revelation. Uniting this with Habermas's sense of a Public Sphere, he explores the role of the theatre and early modern audiences in contributing to the Public Sphere by challenging pre-set conventions and ideologies. In chapters on the social, the state, notions of kind and gentility, the human and ceremony/ritual, crucial shades of meaning are uncovered with special reference to a wide range of plays: the Histories, including Coriolanus and Henry V; the Tragedies, such as Hamlet and Othello, and the Comedies, including Much Ado About Nothing and The Merchant of Venice. This is a unique exploration of how Shakespeare in dramatizing and so challenging conventions of language, thereby questioned static cultural assumptions about gender, class and racial difference. Deep-seated critical approaches to canonical texts are thereby questioned in the service of re-capturing their initial public validity.

Arden Shakespeare and Theory provides a comprehensive analysis of the theoretical developments that have dominated Shakespeare studies in recent years, as well as those that are emerging at the present moment. Each volume provides:· a clear definition of a particular theory;· a survey of its major theorists and critics;· an analysis of its significance in Shakespeare studies;· a summary of relevant political, social and economic contexts;· a wealth of suggested resources for further investigation.Reception Theory provides readers with a unique overview and understanding of the ways in which both audiences and readers have reacted to Shakespeare's works historically and in the present. This study demonstrates how recent emphases on a reader’s and a spectator's role in the creation of meaning might allow us to contemplate Shakespeare’s work in fresh and often provocative ways. Among the plays included as case studies are A Midsummer Night's Dream, Hamlet, The Tempest, King Lear and Henry V. Shakespeare and Reception Theory pays close attention to early modern modes of interaction in the playhouse alongside more recent assumptions that underlie spectating and performing.

This third edition of Modern Criticism and Theory represents a major expansion on its previous incarnations with some twenty five new pieces or essays included. This expansion has two principal purposes. Firstly, in keeping with the collection’s aim to reflect contemporary preoccupations, the reader has expanded forward to include such newly emergent considerations as ecocriticism and post-theory. Secondly, with the aim of presenting as broad an account of modern theory as possible, the reader expands backwards to to take in exemplary pieces by formative writers and thinkers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries such as Marx, Freud and Virginia Woolf.. This radical expansion of content is prefaced by a wide-ranging introduction, which provides a rationale for the collection and demonstrates how connections can be made between competing theories and critical schools. The purpose of the collection remains that of introducing the reader to the guiding concepts of contemporary literary and cultural debate. It does so by presenting substantial extracts from seminal thinkers and surrounding them with the contextual materials necessary to a full understanding. Each selection has a headnote, which gives biographical details of the author and provides suggestions for further reading, and footnotes that help explain difficult references. The collection is ordered both historically and thematically and readers are encouraged to draw for themselves connections between essays and theories. Modern Criticism and Theory has long been regarded as a necessary collection. Now revised for the twenty first century it goes further and provides students and the general reader with a wide-ranging survey of the complex landscape of modern theory and a critical assessment of the way we think – and live – in the world today.
