The story spans from 1835, a time when the Napoleonic Wars were still remembered, to 1877, shortly before the establishment of the German Empire. Mann's narrative not only captures the social descent of the family but also reflects the historical forces that disrupted 19th-century existence and heralded the uncertainties of modern times. The novel, based on Mann's own family history, introduces themes that would become central to his later works, such as the complex relationship between life and art, and the contrast between public and private spheres.
