Illuminates how new modes of artistic production in colonial India shaped the British state’s nationalisation of the East India Company, transforming the relationship between nation and empire This pioneering book explores how art shaped the nationalisation of the East India Company between the loss of its primary monopoly in 1813 and its ultimate liquidation in 1858. Challenging the idea that parliament drove political reform, it argues instead that the Company’s political legitimacy was destabilised by novel modes of artistic production in colonial India. New artistic forms and practices—the result of new technologies like lithography and steam navigation, middle-class print formats like the periodical, the scrapbook and the literary annual, as well as the prevalence of amateur sketching among Company employees—reconfigured the colonial regime’s racial boundaries and techniques of governance. They flourished within transimperial networks, integrating middle-class societies with new political convictions and moral disciplines, and thereby eroding the aristocratic corporate cultures that had previously structured colonial authority in India. Unmaking the East India Company contributes to a reassessment of British art as a global, corporate and intrinsically imperial phenomenon—highlighting the role of overlooked media, artistic styles and print formats in crafting those distinctions of power and identity that defined ‘Britishness’ across the world. Written with palm-sweating intensity from a seasoned air combat veteran whose prose puts you right in the cockpit, this highly praised historical thriller highlights the heroism and bravery of Allied soldiers in a forgotten chapter of World War II. A powerfully authentic and thrilling saga based on the true story of Operation Halyard, WWII's most daring and successful rescue mission, from air combat veteran and acclaimed author Tom Young... Summer 1944: Yugoslavia is locked in a war within a war. In addition to fighting the German occupation, warring factions battle each other. Hundreds of Allied airmen have been shot down over this volatile region, among them American lieutenant Bill Bogdonavich. Though grateful to the locals who are risking their lives to shelter and protect him from German troops, Bogdonavich dreams of the impossible: escape. With three failed air missions behind him, Lieutenant Drew Carlton is desperate for redemption. From a Texas airbase he volunteers for a secretive and dangerous assignment, codenamed Operation Halyard, that will bring together American special operations officers, airmen, and local guerilla fighters in Yugoslavia's green hills. This daring plan--to evacuate hundreds of stranded airmen while avoiding detection by the Germans--faces overwhelming odds. What follows is one of the greatest stories of World War II heroism, an elaborate rescue that required astonishing courage, sacrifice, and resilience.

Wide-ranging and operatic in scale and in scope, Our Time on Earth - Tom Young’s fourth book - is an intuitive gaze at the mystery, promise, and condition of human life on Earth in 2020. In an expansive col-lection of eighty-three new photographs, artfully sequenced into thematic parts, Young brings to us a vis-ual narrative that simultaneously hints at the apocalyptic unfolding of contemporary life while offering reverential hope for a better world.Through a collision of images as minute as a molded snow globe, as expansive as a roiling ocean, and as haunting as steam belching from the tower of a nuclear power plant, Young brings the reader on an epic journey. Here one finds the prayerful silence of a goat at peace in a freshly dug grave, the human tableaux of young people amidst the drenching power of water, and the simple magnificence of moving water frozen into icy stillness. Here as well one finds disturbing aspects of the human mosaic to be found in the common places of everyday life, from a school bus abandoned in a vast mined landscape to a col-lapsing building in the shape of a large cat.In Tom Young’s universe, juxtaposition tells a story while the precise rendering of a moment in time speaks to the mystery of creation and the devotion of a photographer trying to understand a compli-cated world. As curator Aprile Gallant observes in her insightful essay: “The images build upon the other, veering from macro to micro, from vegetable, animal, and mineral to welded, constructed, and manufac-tured… The aggregate of viewing is an awareness of the deep interconnectedness of humans and their environment, a drama that plays out in equally beneficial and devastating ways.”Our Time on Earth plays knowingly off the idea that human endeavors on the planet can be as brief as the beat of a hummingbird’s wing and as long-lasting as mercury and lead embedded in a local river or stream. The question thus arises as to how the traces we leave behind from our time on Earth will reverberate as we move forward to the next generation and the next and the next.

If you boil a kettle twice today, you will have used five times more electricity than a person in Mali uses in a whole year. How can that be possible? Decades after the colonial powers withdrew Africa is still struggling to catch up with the rest of the world. When the same colonists withdrew from Asia there followed several decades of sustained and unprecedented growth throughout the continent. So what went wrong in Africa? And are we helping to fix it, or simply making matters worse? In this provocative analysis, Tom Young argues that so much has been misplaced: our guilt, our policies, and our aid. Human rights have become a cover for imposing our values on others, our shiniest infrastructure projects have fuelled corruption and our interference in domestic politics has further entrenched conflict. Only by radically changing how we think about Africa can we escape this vicious cycle.

Jawane, Hanlee, and Persha stepped off the saucers lift onto planet Earth. They were terrified There was no ceramic bubble to protect them from the cosmo here. There was no turning back. They saw Emily waving from a stand of trees. Due to environmental concerns the future of the Earth looked grim. The Andrians calculated that the ability of the Earth to sustain life as we know it to be 500 years. They also believed that the introduction of the Human-Andrian Hybrids and their resultant offspring should help resolve the debilitating issues plaguing the Earth. With the Hybrids in place on the Earth, The Council of Yield, the Andrians governing body, approved the exchange program. Jawane, Hanlee, and Persha were the first of many Andrians to experience life on Earth; thus, the Assimilation began. There were also military and scientific exchanges made, all in secret not to upset the populous. The Andrians were very much aware of their own advanced intellectual abilities over the Humans. However, they were surprised with the Human's cunning and ability to deceive their traitorous military personnel. The Human-Andrian Hybrids only accented this trait; And even more disturbing to the Andrians was the discovery of a chemical molecule in the brains of Humans which the Andrians did not have. It appeared that this chemical matrix of molecules was required for their next level of exponential mental growth. The abundant appearance of this molecular chemical matrix in Human-Andrian Hybrids seems to be an introduction to the new evolution of specie development. It was postulated by some scientist that the ability to access full cerebral capacity would continue until the new specie could use 100% of their mental capacities. However, none of this mattered to 12 year old, Sara, who went aboard an intergalactic carrier to accompany her friend, Muscula, one of the few of her species saved from extinction by Emily. Being in three months of decontamination was required, but she woke up
