Pre-fabricated architecture is a growing phenomenon in the world of contemporary design. Container and pre-fab homes are both stylish and affordable and an eco-friendly alternative to traditional house builds. The modularity of this type of build allows for greater design flexibility and speed of construction. Today, architectural projects made from recycled loading containers are becoming increasingly popular and, considering the need for more sustainable construction, increasingly necessary. This new book presents 14 eco-friendly architectural projects committed to environmental conservation based on sustainable construction, featuring pre-fabricated homes made of wood, steel, etc., as well as container homes.

When much of our existing housing stock was built, lifestyles were very different. This means that a large proportion of a contemporary architect's work is about adapting these older buildings, rather than building afresh. The challenge for today's architects is thus to adapt our old buildings to our new ways of living, whilst not destroying what we like about them. This often means adding more space to the back, the roof or the side, or even sometimes underneath, whilst retaining the original building's front as part of the streetscape. Houses: Extensions brings together 15 exceptional extension projects including 8 from the UK that showcase some of the most innovative and stylish architectural solutions for adding more space to a home. UK firms featured: Adam Knibb Architects, Chris Dyson Architects, Ashton Porter Architects, Paul Archer Design, AR Design Studio, Tigg+Coll Architects, and Riach Architects.
New Town House brings together a collection of some of the more interesting and creative town house projects which have been recently constructed. The focus on recently completed projects allows for an analysis of the challenges of integrating new buildings in existing residential areas. All of the featured projects share one main characteristic their ability to make the most out of limited spaces in creative ways. Within the basic typology of a flat building between parallel walls, a world of possibilities is opened up: spaces full of light, endless staircases, curtain walls, facades which spread completely out to the street or enclose mysterious gardens and interior patios.

In modern architecture, natural stone is now thought of as a material that provides both elegance and sustainability, which can transform both residential and commercial buildings and is a first choice for both its durability and ecological qualities. The houses showcased in this superbly illustrated volume have been built in line with bioclimatic principles and have all received high praise for the ingenious combinations of materials used in their exterior design.
Discover the latest revolution in residential architecture the mobile home! These outstanding projects showcase some of the truly innovative ways in which architects have taken the mobile home form, and created unique, stylish, and comfortable living spaces that really can be taken anywhere. Each of featured homes all of which are less than 20m2 are accompanied by full colour photographs, architectural illustrations, and a brief description.
Featuring fully illustrated examples of several types of homes (prefabricated, rehabilitated, made with natural materials) this volume is divided into three parts that explore alternative methods in the design and construction of residential projects. The first part looks at the three Rs of home construction - Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle and how this mantra can be applied to construction projects to create homes that are stylish, affordable, and environmentally friendly. The second part looks at how new and emerging technologies can benefit residential projects, both during construction and as finished homes. The final part explores alternatives to the usual concept of a home, looking at prefab housing, cave and underground house, tree house, and camouflaged homes.
This book explains this new direction in architecture, so that in a few decades what may now seem extraordinary will be commonplace. It is a method to build or renovate close to what may eventually be known as bioconstruction - a building system with recycled or recyclable, low-environmental impact materials, or materials that can be extracted by simple processes at a low cost. This book takes a room-by-room look at the house, from the living room to the bathroom and the garden, all trying to preserve materials so that they have a longer life. We give priority to environmental and technological measures in the design phase of a home that save water and energy.
