Explanation, Laws, and Causation
Scientific explanation, laws of nature, and causation are crucial and frontier issues in the philosophy of science. This book studies the complex relationship between the three concepts, aiming to achieve a holistic synthesis about explanation–laws–causation. By reviewing Hempel's scientific explanation models and Salmon's three conceptions – the epistemic, modal, and ontic conception – the book suggests that laws are essential to explanation and that our understanding of laws will help solve the problems of the latter. Concerning the nature of laws, this book tackles both the problems of regularity approach and necessitarian approach. It also proposes that the ontological order of explanation should be from events (or processes) to causation, then to regularity (laws), and finally to science system, but the epistemological order should be from science system to laws to explanation and causation. In addition, this book examines the legitimacy of ceteris paribus laws, the connection between explanation and reduction, the relation between explanation and interpretation, and some other issues closely related to explanation–laws–causation. This book will attract scholars and students of philosophy of science, natural sciences, social sciences, etc.

This book presents modeling methods and algorithms for data-driven prediction and forecasting of practical industrial process by employing machine learning and statistics methodologies. Related case studies, especially on energy systems in the steel industry are also addressed and analyzed. The case studies in this volume are entirely rooted in both classical data-driven prediction problems and industrial practice requirements. Detailed figures and tables demonstrate the effectiveness and generalization of the methods addressed, and the classifications of the addressed prediction problems come from practical industrial demands, rather than from academic categories. As such, readers will learn the corresponding approaches for resolving their industrial technical problems. Although the contents of this book and its case studies come from the steel industry, these techniques can be also used for other process industries. This book appeals to students, researchers, and professionals withinthe machine learning and data analysis and mining communities.

This book contributes insights into second language (L2) students’ learning of academic genres in English for academic purposes (EAP) writing classes by its focus on the current EAP practice in the context of higher education of China. It presents knowledge construction of genre learning research in L2 writing and English for specific purposes (ESP) genre studies, and reports an in-depth qualitative inquiry into three issues of instruction-based genre learning in an academic writing class: students’ learning process of an academic genre in the community of an EAP writing class, students’ individual factors in the learning process, and genre knowledge development through engagement in genre-focused writing instruction. The book has theoretical implications for learning English for academic purposes as well as for learning English as a foreign language in general. It also has pedagogical implications for genre teaching in EAP at Chinese universities and similar educational contexts.

With China becoming a major force in steel research and development, this book highlights the work of a group from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, led by the first four authors. This group has the ideal knowledge base for writing this updated book on heat-resistant steels. The fifth author, Sha, based in the UK, has been collaborating with the Chinese group since 2009 and is the lead or sole author of four research books, all published in English. The last book, “Steels: from materials science to structural engineering,” was published by Springer in 2013. Within two months of its publication, researchers at the University of Science and Technology Liaoning had requested translation of the book into Chinese. Springer obliged, and the Chinese version was published by the Metallurgical Industry Press, Beijing, in August 2014.Sha has organized and completed the writing of the proposed book, though the main research was done in China.
Achieving Inclusive Growth in China Through Vertical Specialization
Vertical Specialization and Inclusive Growth in China discusses the two interrelated developments that have transformed the Chinese economy in recent years. First, the global community has increased calls to foster inclusive economic growth, with China embracing this trend. Second, the explosive growth in China’s trade resulting from international vertical specialization production and trade networks which has complicated the notion of inclusive growth in the Chinese context. This book assesses these two trends quantitatively, giving evidence of the link between vertical specialization and inclusive growth, and then decomposing the inclusive growth effects of vertically specialized trade into six components: GDP growth, export growth, FDI, environment, employment, and innovation. It further explores the differing impact of conventional trade and processing trade on inclusive growth, providing direction for future policy. This second book by the author to consider vertical specialization stresses the importance of integration in driving inclusive growth.

This brief focuses on the current research on location privacy preservation in cognitive radio networks (CRNs). Along with a review of the existing works, this book includes fundamental privacy models, possible frameworks, useful performance, and future research directions. It explores privacy preservation techniques, collaborative spectrum sensing, database-driven CRNS, and modeling potential privacy threats. Conflicts between database owners and unlicensed users can compromise location privacy, and CRNs are a means to mitigate the spectrum scarcity issue due to the increasing demand for wireless channel resources. By examining the current and potential privacy threats, the authors equip readers to understand this developing issue. The brief is designed for researchers and professionals working with computer communication networks and cognitive radio networks. Graduate students interested in networks and communication engineering will also find the brief helpful.
China's Banking Law and the National Treatment of Foreign-Funded Banks
This book assesses new developments in and reform of China's banking law system following its accession of the WTO. It focuses on the relationship between GATS/WTO national treatment obligations and China's banking law. Tracing the history of national treatment in China, the book compares the treatment of foreign-funded banks with the treatment of Chinese-funded banks and examines the structure and shortcomings of the existing banking law framework in China. Offering suggestions as to how the framework could be restructured and analysing the economic and political bases of an integrated banking law framework, the book argues that reorganization would bring about greater consistency with GATS/WTO national treatment requirements. The book also explores the ambiguous definition of prudential carve-out, the subtle relationship between GATS national treatment and market access based on WTO cases, national treatment clauses in China’s bilateral investment treaties, and special treatment on banking in China’s free trade agreements. This volume is a valuable resource for academics and students as well as professionals and policy-makers working in the field of banking, WTO, Chinese law and foreign trade.

Tourette's syndrome (TS) is an inheritable, childhood-onset neuropsychiatric disorder characterised by the presence of motor and phonic tics. Despite decades of extensive studies, the exact disease aetiology remains poorly understood. It is believed that susceptibility to TS is determined by the interactions of multiple genetic loci with unknown environmental factors. As a result, a great deal of research has been focused on identifying TS susceptibility genes. Thus far, at least 12 susceptibility loci have been suggested by genome-wide screenings, but none of them has been replicated probably due to genetic heterogeneity. Candidate gene approach has also suggested evidence for several genes relevant to neuronal signalling such as dopamine receptor and serotonin receptor. This book discusses the current state of genetic studies in TS susceptibility.

The book explores how ethnic minority culture is integrated into school practices inside and outside classrooms in Southwest China. The author investigates the challenges in teaching and administration teachers have encountered in Chinese ethnic minority regions, specifically problems faced by teachers in ethnic Dai and ethnic Tujia; and how pre-service teachers are trained in current teacher education programmes in ethnic minority regions. Drawing on the theoretical frameworks of multicultural education and internal orientalism, the author contextualises multicultural education by analysing Chinese academic debates on the subject as well as investigating how political, social and cultural forces influence education for ethnic minorities in Southwest China. The book will appeal to scholars and graduate students in the fields of education, cultural studies, China studies and ethnic studies.
