Asylsøkerne handler om en gruppe søstre, døtrene til kong Danaos, som har flyktet sammen med sin gamle far fra Egypt og over Middelhavet til Hellas for å søke om asyl. Grunnen til flukten er at de vil unngå å bli tvangsgiftet med fetterne sine. Handlingen i Asylsøkerne er tatt fra gresk mytologi og er lagt til tiden rett etter at verden var blitt skapt. Det er samtidig tankevekkende at en historie med en for oss såpass gjenkjennbar tematikk, ble framført i det athenske teateret for nesten 2 500 år siden. Handlingen, selv om den er forankret i eldgammelt mytestoff, rører ved mange problemstillinger vi kan kjenne igjen i dagens samfunn, som fremmedfrykt, de svakestes rettigheter og den moralske forpliktelsen til å hjelpe forfulgte. Aiskhylos ble født i Elevsis utenfor Athen omkring år 525 f.Kr. og døde på Sicilia ca. 456 f.Kr. Han hadde en dyp forståelse for mennesker i ekstreme situasjoner. Dette var noe han selv hadde erfaring med, blant annet da han kjempet mot perserne i slaget ved Maraton, hvor broren hans falt. Athen var et tyranni da Aiskhylos vokste opp, og han fikk oppleve utviklingen av det athenske demokratiet. Asylsøkerne, som her for første gang foreligger i norsk gjendiktning, ble urframført i 463 f.Kr., året før de siste store demokratiske reformene i Athen, og betydningen av demokratiske beslutninger er også en viktig tematikk i stykket.
