ARTHUR RIMBAUD: MORNING OF ECSTASY: SELECTED POEMS Edited and translated by Andrew Jary Illustrated, with a newly revised text for this edition. With the French text and an English translation. These new versions of searing lyricism will delight lovers of poetry. Andrew Jary has selected the most representative pieces by the whirlwind poet, including 'The Drunken Boat', 'Memory', and healthy chunks of A Season in Hell and Illuminations. Jary has produced clear, unfussy translations of Rimbaud's fiery verse. For a time, when he was a teenager until he was 19, art was crucial for the psychic well-being of the restless Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1891). The young would-be rebel Rimbaud escaped from the bland provincial town of Charleville in Northern France to wander the streets of Paris in poverty. After writing his Illuminations and A Season in Hell, some of the most extraordinary poems of all world literature, Rimbaud renounced it all for a hellish and apparently boring life in Aden. 'Mortel, ange ET demon, autant dire Rimbaud, ' as Rimbaud's lover, Paul Verlaine wrote ('Mortal, angel AND demon, that is to say Rimbaud'.) Arthur Rimbaud is the tornado of world poetry. He out-blasts just about every other poet. For poets, he is more significant than the so-called 'founding fathers' or influential philosophers of modern times: Marx, Freud, Nietzsche and Einstein. For poets, he is 'everybody's favourite hippy', a Communard, a 'precursor of the current movement of subversion of Western notions of self, society, and discourse', and a savage mystic. Arthur Rimbaud is one of the most authentically rebellious of modern poets. Other poets have written of rebellion and radical action, but Rimbaud is one of the very few who actually carried it out (and didn't sound like an idiot when he spoke of it). Picture the young poet in his mid-teens, utterly bored by the living deaths of suburban life, aching to run away to Paris. Though he was dragged back a number of times, Rimbaud's life after his early teens was never again centred in his homeland. True, he returned to his mother, family and homeland, but his true heartland, his landscape of the soul, was elsewhere. Rimbaud was ever a poet of elsewhere, the other place, displacement. He was always another person: 'Je est un autre (I is an other). He rebelled partly for the joy of rebellion. His early poetry is marked by an extraordinary virulence and anger. Illuminations and A Season in Hell, his major works, are also powered by an immense anger - a cosmic anger, a psycho-cultural-spiritual turmoil. Introduction, bibliography and notes. Includes 5 pages of new illustrations. www.crmoon.com
ARTHUR RIMBAUD: A SEASON IN HELL Edited and translated by Andrew Jary A new translation of Arthur Rimbaud's extraordinary poetic statement, written in 1873. The sensual, violent and anguished emotion in Rimbaud's visionary 'alchemy of the word' remains startling, and continues to inspire poets. Printed with the French text facing the translation. ENGLISH DESCRIPTION A Sneak Peak of the End of the World, from the "Portable Poetry" collection, is an assortment of passionate blows by Arthur Rimbaud, a rebel who delved into hell in order to revolutionize poetry. Rimbaud broke the seams of modern poetry before turning twenty years old. At such a young age he also pulverized any boundaries of being bohemian. An exemplary rebel, he understood the figure of the poet as a sort of psychic of a new life, a romantic icon moved by a passion that crashed onto his blank pages. This work brings together some of his most important poems, those which were the result of his years in Paris, of the destructive passion that brought him and Paul Verlaine together, of a life on the wild side, of drunkenness, and of not being happy but always being fierce and ruthless.
Arthur Rimbaud's "A Season in Hell" is a prose poem loosely divided into nine parts. In one part of the poem the poet portrays quite transparently his own relationship with French symbolist poet Paul Verlaine. The two had a brief alcohol and drug fueled affair which finally came to end when Verlaine shot Rimbaud in the wrist in a drunken rage. "A Season in Hell," which has been referred to as a pioneering example of modern symbolism, is included in this collection along with "The Drunken Boat," a fragmented first-person narrative which vividly describes the drifting and sinking of a boat lost at sea. It is probably one of the best known works from Rimbaud's early period. Also included in this edition is what is arguably Rimbaud's masterpiece, "Illuminations." A collection of forty-two poems almost all of which are in a prose format. Albert Camus hailed Rimbaud as "the poet of revolt, and the greatest." This greatness can be readily seen in this exemplary collection of "A Season in Hell, The Drunken Boat, and Illuminations". This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper and follows the translations of James Sibley Watson, Lionel Abel, and Wallace Fowlie.
Arthur Rimbaud's Illuminations reissued as a Carcanet Classic. Arthur Rimbaud's Illuminations, first published in 1886, changed the language of poetry. In John Ashbery the book has a translator whose virtuosic originality brings Rimbaud's visions alive. The `crystalline jumble' of Illuminations, Ashbery writes, is still emitting pulses of energy. `If we are absolutely modern - and we are - it's because Rimbaud commanded us to be.' Ashbery relays the kaleidoscopic dazzle of the original, a Splendide Hotel `built amid the tangled heap of ice floes and the polar night', where the Witch `will never want to tell us what she knows, and which we do not know'.
