This volume provides a thorough philological and dramatic commentary on Euripides' Phoenissae, the first detailed commentary in English since 1911. Phoenissae is of special interest both as a specimen of late Euripidean dramaturgy, and as the subject of longstanding disputes over the extent of interpolation and rewriting to be detected in it. This commentary aims to offer a balanced treatment of issues of language, style, structure, and dramatic technique as well as to explain the reasons for and uncertainties of the constitution of the text. The introduction treats the play's structure and themes, the possible date, the features of the original production, the varied background of Theban myth against which Euripides' choices and innovations may be judged, and general issues relevant to the problem of interpolation. The Greek text is that of the author's 1988 Teubner edition.

The Bacchae of Euripides

The Bacchae of Euripides

Euripides

University of Nebraska Press

pokkari
This new translation of The Bacchae-that strange blend of Aeschylean grandeur and Euripidean finesse-is an attempt to reproduce for the American stage the play as it most probably was when new and unmutilated in 406 B.C. The achievement of this aim involves a restoration of the "great lacuna" at the climax and the discovery of several primary stage effects very likely intended by Euripides. These effects and controversial questions of the composition and stylistics are discussed in the notes and the accompanying essay.

A stand-alone edition of Euripides's The Bacchae taken from Chicago's renowned translations of the Greek tragedies. Dionysus, son of Zeus, has journeyed to the land of his birth expecting to be received as a god. After being rejected by his kin, he turns to the women of Thebes, driving them into a delirious frenzy. Dressed in animal skins and crowned with leaves, they roam wild in the hills as the king tries to restore order--with horrifying results. Written in the final years of Euripides's life and first staged posthumously, The Bacchae is presented here in William Arrowsmith's energetic translation, drawn from the authoritative third edition of the University of Chicago Press's Complete Greek Tragedies series. An introduction by Mark Griffith and Glenn W. Most provides essential information about The Bacchae's first production, plot, and reception in antiquity, and an appendix presents Arrowsmith's hypothetical reconstruction of fifty lines missing from the denouement of the play.

Inngår i serien Kanon.
