Anne Washburn's dynamic rendering of Euripides' rarely-seen final play returns us to a world where a father is challenged to sacrifice his daughter to appease the gods. This intelligent transadaptation ofIphigenia in Aulisis largely faithful to its source material, with a fresh and irreverent edge.

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION "Beware of her: her frown is wild and her nature abominable." After returning from Colchis with the Golden Fleece, Jason seduces King Ae tes' daughter, Medea, and marries her. However, when they arrive in Corinth and he abandons her for King Creon's daughter, Medea plots one of the most terrible revenge stories in literature. According to the author's contemporaries, Euripides preferred to present "things as they are and not as they should be," and perhaps that is what continues to attract us to this work: its raw reality, its portrayal of passions, and its bold commitment to bloodshed. This version, written in free verse, is especially suitable for the stage and is accompanied by a panoramic introduction. This edition concludes with a modern analysis of Medea as an archetype in literature and film.

Trojan Women tells the story of the survivors of the Trojan War, the women and children taken into slavery by the victorious Greek army. Through the tragedy's central character, the matriarch Hecuba, this late play (415 BCE) demonstrates Euripides' commitment to speaking on behalf of the less powerful and offers a scathing critique of Athenian behavior as the city fought its own disastrous war with its southern neighbor, Sparta. Trojan Women features well-known characters from Greek mythology, including the prophetess Cassandra, the gods Athena and Poseidon, and most notably, the infamous Helen, the cause of the war, who must defend herself to the husband she abandoned. This new translation features a text committed to accuracy and clarity, one developed in collaboration with actors for clear reading and performance. Appendices provide other important literary treatment of the women in the play, from Homer to Shakespeare.

Here is a new comic-book version of Euripides's classic The Trojan Women, which follows the fates of Hekabe, Andromache, and Kassandra after Troy has been sacked and all its men killed. This collaboration between the visual artist Rosanna Bruno and the poet and classicist Anne Carson attempts to give a genuine representation of how human beings are affected by warfare. Therefore, all the characters take the form of animals (except Kassandra, whose mind is in another world).

?Poochigian's translation is a triumph?a remarkably lucid and vibrant rendition . . . The script's language is precise yet sonorous, expertly constructed in iambic pentameter to both moving and chilling effect.? --Aram Kouyoumdjian, Asbarez ?By far the most theatrically assured rendition of the play I've encountered. The fluid translation by Aaron Poochigian is as mercurial as the staging.? --Charles McNulty, The Los Angeles Times
