The Constants of Nature

The Constants of Nature

Peter Johnson

Routledge
2019
sidottu
First published in 1997, this volume constitutes an attempt to resolve certain misunderstandings and ignorance concerning the constants of Nature. Its purpose is to look closely at the philosophical arguments made to support the customary conventional view of measurement, particularly with regard to constants. Peter Johnson argues that historic accounts provide only a partial understanding of the nature of constants, and that the conventionalism that rises relates only to the numerical representations used to quantify the measurement of quantities.

Peter Johnson has long been acclaimed by such poets as Russell Edson and Charles Simic as one of the masters of the prose poem. In his new book, Old Man Howling at the Moon, he continues his exploration of the genre, exhibiting his usual comic touch. Johnson calls these new poems "complaints" and traces his influences back to fourteenth-century France, while pointing out in the preface that his wise-fool Grumpy Old Everyman is also very much a part of a tradition, including writers as diverse as Allen Ginsberg, Catullus, and Nicanor Parra. Old Man Howling at the Moon is a welcome arrival at a time when anger and satire are desperately needed to enliven a contemporary poetry scene where often fashionable irony reigns supreme.

Peters glimpses of family life in Newport and Bar Harbor are, in fact, an ethnography of top drawer New England society. The notion of the Johnson père teaching his son that then US President Franklin Roosevelt was a traitor to our class seems incredible today. Cleveland Amorys The Proper Bostonians was filled with similar tales of the same sorts of people, but in a more detached way.

The popular north Wales seaside resort of Llandudno has a surprisingly long and intriguing history that predates the development of the present town, though its influence is still very apparent today. In the mid-nineteenth century major changes saw a new town emerging, one dominated by services for holidaymakers and visitors. Founded by Lord Mostyn and his family, this multifaceted industry embraced hotels, stagecoaches, traditional Punch and Judy, postcard kings, museums, the lifeboat, Bronze Age copper mines and colourful characters such as the famous ‘birdman’ of the early 1900s, to name but a few of those people who have worked – and continue to work – in many and varied ways to serve the tourist industry and the town. Illustrated with a fascinating series of contemporary and rare historical photographs, local author Peter Johnson explores the life of the ‘Queen of the Welsh Resorts’ from its earliest days, through two world wars and into the twenty-first century as Llandudno continues to evolve and thrive as a popular holiday destination.

Opened in 1836 as a horse tramway using gravity to carry slate from Blaenau Ffestiniog to Porthmadog, by the 1920s the Festiniog Railway had left its years of technical innovation and high profits long behind. After the First World War, the railway s path led inexorably to closure, to passengers in 1939 and goods in 1946\. After years of abandonment, visionary enthusiasts found a way to take control of the railway and starting its restoration in 1955\. Not only did they have to fight the undergrowth, they also had to fight a state-owned utility which had appropriated a part of the route. All problems were eventually overcome and a 2 mile deviation saw services restored to Blaenau Ffestiniog in 1982\. Along the way, the railway found its old entrepreneurial magic, building new steam locomotives and carriages, and rebuilding the Welsh highland Railway, to become a leading 21st century tourist attraction. Historian Peter Johnson, well known for his books on Welsh railways, has delved into the archives and previously untapped sources to produce this new history, a must-read for enthusiasts and visitors alike. The Festiniog Railway s pre-1921 history is covered in Peter Johnson s book, Festiniog Railway the Spooner era and after 1830-1920, also published by Pen & Sword Transport.
ADHD & the Focused Mind

As a young boy, his difficulty in concentrating was diagnosed as ADHD. In school, his mind always seemed to wander until he found an activity that he liked. By using that one activity, his mother was able to teach him to focus and develop self-discipline. Debbie Phelps found a way to reach past her son s ADHD and that young boy, Michael Phelps, went on to win twenty-two Olympic medal and break thirty-nine world records in swimming. Now the principle that guided Debbie Phelps approach is the subject of this breakthrough title. Written by three experts in their fields a pediatric neurologist, a psychiatrist, and a martial arts instructor ADHD & the Focused Mind provides a complete program for instilling the ability to focus in both children and adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. For centuries, martial arts teachers have taught their young students the art of combat, from Akido to Karate to Taekwondo. However, as varied as each form of martial arts may be, they all share an underlying skill, and it is the same skill that world class athletes have in common. They all base their techniques on the ability to clearly focus on the task that is in front of them, whether it s defeating an opponent or coming in first. In this book, the authors have created a unique coaching program that focuses on acquiring this very skill to overcome ADHD. The book begins by explaining the common signs of ADHD. It then looks at the brain and discusses what researchers have discovered about Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. The remaining chapters detail the components of the program, including its principles, its goals, and the practical ways in which these goals can be achieved. The authors recognize that all children are different, so the program has the flexibility to work within a child s comfort level while still attaining the necessary level of discipline. The text concludes with a discussion of medications and ADHD, and what s right for your child. Some of the most successful people in the world have ADHD, but just like star athletes, they have discovered that developing their own unique ways of focusing enables them to get ahead. ADHD & the Focused Mind provides coaching techniques that can profoundly improve the life of any child suffering from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder."

Powerful, riveting, real. Sixteen celebrated authors bring us raw, insightful stories that explore guns and teens in a fiction collection that is thought provoking and emotionally gripping. For fans of Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock and Give a Boy a Gun, and with an array of YA talent like the late great Walter Dean Myers, the poetic Joyce Carol Oates, the prophetic Elizabeth Wein, and the gritty Chris Crutcher, these are evocative voices that each has a different perspective to give. Capturing the hurt and the healing, victims and perpetrators, these stories get to the heart of the matter. From a boy whose low self-esteem is impacted when a gun comes into his possession to a student recalling a senseless tragedy that befell a favorite teacher, from a realistic look at hunting to a provocative look at a family that defies stereotypes, each emotional story stirs the debate to new levels. The juxtaposition of guns and their consequences offers moving tales, each a reminder of how crucial the question of guns in our society is, and the impact they have on all of us. Other acclaimed contributors are Marc Aronson, Edward Averett, Francesca Lia Block, Alex Flinn, Gregory Galloway, Jenny Hubbard, Peter Johnson, Ron Koertge, Chris Lynch, Eric Shanower, Will Weaver, and Tim Wynne-Jones.
The Formation and Development of Small Business
This book brings together thirty years of original empirical research on key aspects of the formation and development of small firms from selected articles authored or co-authored by Peter Johnson. Complete with a comprehensive introduction from the author placing the work in relation to the contemporary debates on the subject and providing a cohesive overview, these essays provide an excellent historical context for current research in this area. Many of the studies in this book emphasise the interrelatedness of economic activity and decisions, an emphasis that serves as an important reminder of the complex business environments in which small firms operate. The book is divided into five sections. The first part focuses on the process of business formation. In part two, the role of new firms in regional development is considered. The third section deals with employment issues, whilst part four looks at various aspects of growth and development. Finally, the book concludes with two articles on policy.

Narrow Gauge Lines of the British Isles

Narrow Gauge Lines of the British Isles

Although standard gauge railways - albeit of different gauges - came to dominate the railways of Britain and Ireland, there was also a considerable number of narrow gauge lines constructed throughout the British Isles. Whilst many of these were built almost exclusively for industrial purposes and never saw regular passenger service, a significant number from the Cambeltown & Machrihanish on the Mull of Kintyre, to the Southwold on the Suffolk Coast and the Lynton & Barnstaple in North Devon, carried regular passenger services. Within the British Isles, three areas - Wales, the Isle of Man and Ireland - had the greatest concentration of narrow gauge lines and it was in these areas that the lines survived the longest. In Ireland, lines such as the County Donegal and Londonderry & Lough Swilly survived until the late 1950s and in Wales, a number of the lines survived into the postwar era and were to become amongst the pioneers of the preservation movement. This new book will look in detail at the narrow gauge lines across the British Isles, illustrated with a comprehensive selection of both colour and mono photographs, the latter because a number of the lines featured had closed before the arrival of colour photography. Informative and extended captions illuminate the illustrations and provide a brilliant history of these interesting lines.

This is a unique type of book; at least, I have never encountered a book of this kind. The best description of it I can give is that it is a mystery novel, developing on three levels, and imbued with both educational and philosophical/moral issues. If this summary description does not help understanding the particular character and allure of the book, possibly a more detailed explanation will be found useful. One of the primary goals of the author is to interest readers—in particular, young mathematiciansorpossiblypre-mathematicians—inthefascinatingworldofelegant and easily understandable problems, for which no particular mathematical kno- edge is necessary, but which are very far from being easily solved. In fact, the prototype of such problems is the following: If each point of the plane is to be given a color, how many colors do we need if every two points at unit distance are to receive distinct colors? More than half a century ago it was established that the least number of colorsneeded for such a coloring is either 4, or 5, or 6 or 7. Well, which is it? Despite efforts by a legion of very bright people—many of whom developed whole branches of mathematics and solved problems that seemed much harder—not a single advance towards the answer has been made. This mystery, and scores of other similarly simple questions, form one level of mysteries explored. In doing this, the author presents a whole lot of attractive results in an engaging way, and with increasing level of depth.

Narrow gauge railways, so well suited to difficult, mountainous terrain, were built in many of the UK’s most scenic locations. Their genesis was in mines and quarries where they replaced man- or horse-pulled wagons, but their adaptability meant that by the 1860s they were also carrying passengers, in some cases over quite considerable distances. Today a good proportion of all the important lines survive in the service of tourists, whose appreciation of the landscape, and the railways themselves, keep these relics of industrial Britain alive in all their variety. Peter Johnson has been researching and writing about narrow gauge lines for many years, and this is the perfect introduction to a rich and appealing corner of British railway history.
