One of Elena Ferrante's Top 40 Books by Women G.H., a well-to-do Rio sculptress, enters the room of her maid, which is as clear and white 'as in an insane asylum from which dangerous objects have been removed'. There she sees a cockroach - black, dusty, prehistoric - crawling out of the wardrobe and, panicking, slams the door on it. Her irresistible fascination with the dying insect provokes a spiritual crisis, in which she questions her place in the universe and her very identity, propelling her towards an act of shocking transgression. Clarice Lispector's spare, deeply disturbing yet luminous novel transforms language into something otherworldly, and is one of her most unsettling and compelling works. Clarice Lispector was a Brazilian novelist and short story writer. Her innovation in fiction brought her international renown. References to her literary work pervade the music and literature of Brazil and Latin America. She was born in the Ukraine in 1920, but in the aftermath of World War I and the Russian Civil War, the family fled to Romania and eventually sailed to Brazil. She published her first novel, Near to the Wildheart in 1943 when she was just twenty-three, and the next year was awarded the Graça Aranha Prize for the best first novel. Many felt she had given Brazillian literature a unique voice in the larger context of Portuguese literature. After living variously in Italy, the UK, Switzerland and the US, in 1959, Lispector with her children returned to Brazil where she wrote her most influential novels including The Passion According to G.H. She died in 1977, shortly after the publication of her final novel, The Hour of the Star.

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION First published in 1969, Apprenticeship or The Book of Pleasures sparked controversy among critics, who still debate its many possible interpretations. This is the story of how love is forged between two souls: through a demanding process of inner exposure, the protagonists rediscover their identities and reach a vital renewal through mutual surrender. In her search for individuality, the heroine's true learning lies in finding a place for her own way of being a woman in society. She is unconcerned with motherhood, family expectations, and marriage, but rather with her involuntary resistance to life itself.
--Luiz Fernando Carvalho ENGLISH DESCRIPTION Now in paperback, what many consider to be Clarice Lispector's masterpiece. G. H. -- whose full name we will never know -- is an independent woman, an amateur sculptor, and well-connected in the most influential circles of Rio de Janeiro. One day, alone in her penthouse, she experiences an extraordinary event that confronts her with her own limits. This experience provokes nausea and repulsion and unleashes a torrent of intimate reflections, some previously unknown to her, about her emotions, fears, anxieties, and the essence of her existence. What seems like a trivial event transforms into a catalyst that leads her to examine her life from childhood and, ultimately, to decide to overcome her deepest fears. "Considered by many to be Clarice Lispector's masterpiece." "G.H. becomes an ally of those who dwell in catastrophe, of all of us who, at some point in our lives, have lost ourselves." -Luiz Fernando Carvalho
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION This new translation of Clarice Lispector's sensational first book tells the story of a middle-class woman's life from childhood through an unhappy marriage and its dissolution to transcendence. Near to the Wild Heart, published in Rio de Janeiro in 1943, introduced Brazil to what one writer called "Hurricane Clarice" a twenty-three-year-old girl who wrote her first book in a tiny rented room and then baptized it with a title taken from Joyce: "He was alone, unheeded, near to the wild heart of life." The book was an unprecedented sensation ― the discovery of a genius. Narrative epiphanies and interior monologue frame the life of Joana, from her middle-class childhood through her unhappy marriage and its dissolution to transcendence, when she proclaims: "I shall arise as strong and comely as a young colt."
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION Beyond passion, Living Water aims at the heart of life and defies death in its defense of joy. "In Living Water, a sort of long letter to an unknown addressee, Clarice Lispector lets the mind run free, evoking the strength of the moment, writing, painting, or her own loneliness. The result is a book of singular vigor." --Le Monde Where are the limits of language? Living Water is a way to experience those very limits. A vague epistle to a mute recipient, this work constantly surpasses the borders of that ample family of heartbreak letters it partly belongs to. This book, defying the limits and conventions uncompromisingly, opens a shared space for the one who writes and the one who reads. A fundamental piece in the author's literary production, as well as in literature written in the Portuguese language.
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION Clarice Lispector's best-selling masterpiece―"her finest book" (The Nation)―now in a special hardcover edition to celebrate the centenary of her birth, with an illuminating new afterword by her son. The Hour of the Star, Clarice Lispector's consummate final novel, may well be her masterpiece. Narrated by the cosmopolitan Rodrigo S.M., this brief, strange, and haunting tale is the story of Macab a, one of life's unfortunates. Living in the slums of Rio and eking out a poor living as a typist, Macab a loves movies, Coca-Cola, and her rat of a boyfriend; she would like to be like Marilyn Monroe, but she is ugly, underfed, sickly, and unloved. Rodrigo recoils from her wretchedness, and yet he cannot avoid the realization that for all her outward misery, Macab a is inwardly free. She doesn't seem to know how unhappy she should be. As Macab a heads toward her absurd death, Lispector employs her pathetic heroine against her urbane, empty narrator―edge of despair to edge of despair―and, working them like a pair of scissors, she cuts away the reader's preconceived notions about poverty, identity, love, and the art of fiction. In her last book she takes readers close to the true mystery of life and leaves us deep in Lispector territory indeed.
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION Every short story by this mythical Brazilian writer, collected for the first time in Penguin in a single volume. "Clarice Lispector is enigmatic, mystical, contradictory, and philosophical. Even though she starts in familiar territory... she quickly deviates to a realm where sound turns jarring and the landscape becomes undecipherable, taking on unexpected nuances." --The New York Times This volume gathers the entire short fiction by an author that breathed life into universal concerns of everyday existence, or our eternal questions regarding the human condition. Author of brilliant and personal stories among the most emblematic in Brazilian literature, Clarice Lispector is unanimously considered one of the greatest voices in the twentieth century. Her figure and legacy irradiate today the same kind of magnetism that captivated readers from all over the world since her first book was published.

Talking animals take center stage--and explain the mysteries of the world --in this zany, Kipling-esque picture book from literary great Clarice Lispector for ages 5 to 9. Have you ever wondered why birds have no teeth? Or why sometimes black clouds do not rain? Ulisses the talking dog has the answers "Once upon a time: me " announces the narrator of this tall clever tale about a talking dog named Ulisses, his owner Clarice, a rooster named Evidio, a hen named Edissea, and a greedy fig tree. The narrator is none other than Ulisses the dog, and his story really gets started when a bad witch named Exelia floats into town disguised as a black cloud. The fig tree wants to get rich quick--and with the witch's help, she hatches a dark plan to make Edissea and her fellow hens lay eggs all night long. But the plan backfires when the birds cluck and crow around the clock in protest, driving the fig tree to distraction. In this madcap story by Clarice Lispector, one of the foremost writers of the twentieth century, animals are the master storytellers and the prime movers. As in a Rudyard Kipling Just So story, they help explain the mysteries of the world, such as why birds have no teeth. But dogs don't know everything - for instance, how do you eat the fruit of the jabuticaba, the Brazilian grapetree? "You, kid, ask a grownup," concludes Ulisses. Lispector's story is perfect for ages 5 to 9 years old.
This radiant selection of Clarice Lispector's best and best-loved stories includes such familiar favorites as "The Smallest Woman in the World,""Love," "Family Ties," and "The Egg and the Chicken." Lispector's luminous regard for life's small revelatory incidents is legendary, and here her genius is concentrated in a fizzing, portable volume. Covert Joy offers the particular bliss a book can bring that she expresses in the title story: Joy would always be covert for me... Sometimes I'd sit in the hammock, swinging with the book open on my lap, not touching it, in the purest ecstasy.I was no longer a girl with a book: I was a woman with her lover
