John Stuart Mill's On Liberty was published in 1859 and introduced one of the most powerful defenses of individual freedom in nineteenth-century social and political philosophy. Mill's mission in writing On Liberty can perhaps be best understood by looking at how he discussed his work in his Autobiography.
