John Stuart Mill's On Liberty was published in 1859 and introduced one of the most powerful defenses of individual freedom in nineteenth-century social and political philosophy. Mill has mentioned his opinions On Liberty to be about, the importance, to humans and society, to various types of character, and of giving full opportunity to human nature to grow itself in endless and clashing directions. He thinks liberty is the ability to improve and to stay away from social gatherings. Mill's passionate encouragement of spontaneity, uniqueness, and diversity, alongside his disrespect for compulsory consistency and the tyranny of well-known opinion, has attracted respect for and judgment of the book.

A product of the deliberate effort of his father to create a particular genius that would continue to advance the ethical philosophy of utilitarianism; philosopher, political economist, and Member of Parliament, John Stuart Mill was one of the most influential thinkers of the 19th century. In "On Liberty," John Stuart Mill begins by writing, "The subject of this essay is not the so-called 'liberty of the will', so unfortunately opposed to the misnamed doctrine of philosophical necessity; but civil, or social liberty: the nature and limits of the power which can be legitimately exercised by society over the individual." It is this concept that is at the heart of this work. John Stuart Mill eloquently ponders the question of where the line should be drawn between the freedom of individuals and the authority of the state. As he puts it, "The struggle between liberty and authority is the most conspicuous feature in the portions of history with which we are earliest familiar..." On Liberty is a philosophical essay by the English philosopher John Stuart Mill. Published in 1859, it applies Mill's ethical system of utilitarianism to society and state. Mill suggests standards for the relationship between authority and liberty. He emphasizes the importance of individuality, which he considers prerequisite to the higher pleasures-the summum bonum of utilitarianism. Furthermore, Mill asserts that democratic ideals may result in the tyranny of the majority. Among the standards proposed are Mill's three basic liberties of individuals, his three legitimate objections to government intervention, and his two maxims regarding the relationship of the individual to society.

Mill's mission in writing On Liberty can perhaps be best understood by looking at how he discussed his work in his Autobiography. Mill wrote that he believed On Liberty to be about "the importance, to man and society, of a large variety in types of character, and of giving full freedom to human nature to expand itself in innumerable and conflicting directions." This celebration of individuality and disdain for conformity runs throughout On Liberty. Mill rejects attempts, either through legal coercion or social pressure, to coerce people's opinions and behavior. He argues that the only time coercion is acceptable is when a person's behavior harms other people--otherwise, society should treat diversity with respect.
Utilitarianism (Royal Collector's Edition) (Case Laminate Hardcover with Jacket)
Utilitarianism is a family of consequentialist ethical theories that promotes actions that maximize happiness and well-being for the affected individuals. The basic idea behind utilitarianism is to in some sense maximize utility, which is often defined in terms of well-being or related concepts. It has been applied to social welfare economics, the crisis of global poverty, the ethics of raising animals for food, and the importance of avoiding existential risks to humanity.Utilitarianism considers the interests of all humans equally. Proponents of utilitarianism have disagreed on a number of points, such as whether actions should be chosen based on their likely results, or whether agents should conform to rules that maximize utility. While the seeds of the theory can be found in Aristippus and Epicurus, who viewed happiness as the only good, the tradition of utilitarianism properly began with Bentham, and has included John Stuart Mill, Henry Sidgwick, and Peter Singer. This case laminate collector's edition includes a Victorian inspired dust-jacket.
