This is the first English translation of the seminar Martin Heidegger gave during the Winter of 1934-35, which dealt with Hegel's Philosophy of Right. Die von Heidegger sogenannten Schwarzen Hefte bilden ein in der deutschen Geistesgeschichte nicht nur des letzten Jahrhunderts einzigartiges Manuskript. Von 1931 bis zum Anfang der siebziger Jahre zeichnet Heidegger in vierunddreissig Wachstuchheften Gedanken und Gedankengefuge auf. Zuweilen - wie in den Uberlegungen (GA 94-96) der dreissiger Jahre - stellen sie eine unmittelbare Auseinandersetzung mit der Zeit dar. Dann - wie in den Vier Heften (GA 99) vom Ende der vierziger Jahre - erweisen sie sich als philosophische Versuche, so dass die Schwarzen Hefte sich am ehesten als Denktagebucher bezeichnen lassen. Weil die Aufzeichnungen sich immer wieder der Nahe der Tagesereignisse aussetzen, zeigen sie sich in einem unverwechselbaren Stil. In den Schwarzen Heften scheint der Leser dem Denker so nah zu sein wie sonst nie. Er kann spuren, wie sehr sich das Denken auf sein Gedachtes einlasst. Die Auseinandersetzung mit der Entscheidung zum einjahrigen Rektorat an der Freiburger Universitat 1933/34 nimmt in Band 94 einen grossen Raum ein. Es wird deutlich, dass Heidegger bei aller Zustimmung zum politischen Umbruch der Nationalsozialisten von Anfang an Bedenken gegen diese hegt. Die Niederlegung des Amtes gibt neuen Raum frei fur die Ausarbeitung des seinsgeschichtlichen Denkens, das unmittelbarer als in allen anderen Schriften Heideggers auf alltagliche Phanomene in Religion, Kunst und Wissenschaft angewendet wird. Insbesondere diese seine seinsgeschichtlichen Lagebeurteilungen bestimmen den Charakter dieser Hefte.

Die Dokumente, die das Verhaltnis belegen und in den Nachlassen Arendt und Heidegger im Deutschen Literaturarchiv Marbach lagern, waren bislang nicht zuganglich. In diesem Band werden sie erstmals veroffentlicht. Dieser Publikation mit ihrem grossen Fundus an Materialien kommt erhebliche biographische und werkgeschichtliche Bedeutung zu. Diese als sogenannter Natorp-Bericht bekannt gewordene Ausarbeitung Heideggers entstand im Zusammenhang mit der Wiederbesetzung zweier philosophischer Extraordinariate in Marburg und Gottingen im Jahre 1922. This volume consists of two lecture series given by Heidegger in the 1940s and 1950s. The lectures given in Bremen constitute the first public lectures Heidegger delivered after World War II, when he was officially banned from teaching. Here, Heidegger openly resumes thinking that deeply engaged him with Hoelderlin's poetry and themes developed in his earlier works. In the Freiburg lectures Heidegger ponders thought itself and freely engages with the German idealists and Greek thinkers who had provoked him in the past. Andrew J. Mitchell's translation allows English-speaking readers to explore important connections with Heidegger's earlier works on language, logic, and reality.

Die Erlauterungen zu Holderlins Dichtung stammen aus der Zeit von 1936 bis 1968. Im Vorwort zur zweiten Auflage der Einzelausgabe schreibt Heidegger: Die Erlauterungen gehoren in das Gesprach eines Denkens mit einem Dichten, dessen geschichtliche Einzigkeit niemals literarhistorisch bewiesen, in die jedoch durch das denkende Gesprach gewiesen werden kann. Dieses denkende Gesprach Heideggers mit der Dichtung Holderlins setzte Anfang der dreissiger Jahre mit dem Beginn von Heideggers seinsgeschichtlichem Denken ein, auf dessen Ausarbeitungsweg Holderlin als der Dichter, der, so Heidegger, in die Zukunft weist, zum unablassigen Begleiter wurde. Heideggers Auseinandersetzung mit Holderlin steht als die Begegnung eines Denkers mit einem Dichter einzigartig da. Noch 1966 erklart Heidegger im beruhmten Spiegel-Gesprach, dass mein Denken in einem unumganglichen Bezug zur Dichtung Holderlins stehe. Die Ausgabe enthalt die Randbemerkungen aus Heideggers Handexemplaren und einen Anhang und ist damit text- und seitenidentisch mit Band 4 der Gesamtausgabe.

Available in English for the first time, this first draft of Heidegger's opus, "Being and Time", provides a unique insight into Heidegger's Phenomenology. "The Concept of Time" presents Heidegger's so-called Dilthey review, widely considered the first draft of his celebrated masterpiece, "Being and Time". Here Heidegger reveals his deep commitment to Wilhelm Dilthey and Count Yorck von Wartenburg. He agrees with them that historicity must be at the centre of the new philosophy to come. However, he also argues for an ontological approach to history. From this ontological turn he develops the so-called categories of Dasein. This work demonstrates Heidegger's indebtedness to Yorck and Dilthey and gives further evidence to the view that thought about history is the germ cell of "Being and Time". However, it also shows that Heidegger's commitment to Dilthey was not without reservations and that his analysis of Dasein actually employs Husserl's phenomenology. The work reopens the question of history in a broader sense, as Heidegger struggles to thematize history without aligning it with world-historical events. The text also provides a concise and readable summary of the main themes of "Being and Time" and as such is an ideal companion to that text.
